JD 60 starter

If I had known how difficult it is to install I would have never removed the starter on my 1956 JD60. The battery cable is in the way of the starter push rod. Is the cable supposed to pass under or over the push rod. My maintenance manual mentions nothing about the starting system. A diagram would really help. Can I download one off the net?

look things over and figure it out, don't need a manual to tell where the battery cable goes, and it wont anyhow.

Thanks, but I am hoping to connect with someone who knows how it should go. I would hate to have to pull the starter again.

I can look mine over tomorrow and maybe take a pic, too dark in my barn tonight. I removed my JD 60 starter a month or so back to put a new switch on it and a new cable. Wasn?t as difficult to do as I had read about, .....

I can not tell you where it goes around the push rod. I can tell you that it needs to be parallel with the starter when tight. When you put the starter up into position the cable lays along the top of the starter so it is not pinched in anyway. Also if someone has the wrong end on the starter end of the cable it makes the job more fun too.

There is a flat copper strap that bolts to the switch on the starter. This strap sticks out through a hole in the case and has a bolt formed to it for your battery cable to bolt to. I hope this makes sense to you. You can see it on page 89 in JD Parts catalog 0244.

Yes, I had removed the copper strap when I had the starter out. Maybe I put it together wrong. That strap had an angle bent on one end. Maybe I bolted the wrong end of the strap to the starter. A picture would be worth a thousand words in this case. Do you remember how the bend was supposed to be on that strap? Is the battery cable supposed to hug the frame near the starter, behind the flywheel?

Good news! I found a picture of a rebuilt starter for sale. I was able to zoom in to see how the copper strap is supposed to be aligned. Can't wait to check it out in the morning. Thanks everyone!

I noticed last night that the starter end connector on the battery cable is an offset fixture. Mine is bolted to the copper strip with the offset out. I need to remove the cable and rotate it 180 degrees to move it closer to the frame of the tractor.

The battery cable hugs the case behind the flywheel, and hooks to the bolt that is affixed to one end of the copper strap. If I were a little more computer literate I would show page 89 of the 60 parts catalog, but as it is, that is beyond my abilities.

I'll try this.....

That is the best I can do.
