Have113,000 miles on my 2013 Silverado 5.3.i want to start using an additive in my oil to help protect my engine.thoughts on Lucas? Or is this only for diesels?i use synthetic oil already

What makes you think you need an additive? Just the mileage and no other reason? Lucas could probably give you a lot of suggestions but they don't come for free. Their opinion might be slightly biased though. I wonder if there has been any confirmed and documented evidence in studies and tests that show that using that stuff is beneficial?

Nothing wrong with the engine.just want it to stay that way, maybe a little extra protection/prevention.l

that's not many miles to be concerned about been doing it for years on wifes mail vehicle were usually pushing 300,000 when start with another unit. just little over four years usually one we have now I am sure will be more cause we can not get it new anymore, just been regular old 10w 30 oil whole time. brakes tires that's whole different deal. I would not use the additive just more dollars no return that we seen.

Trucking companies have tested most all of these additives and found them to not be cost effective. These tests were over millions on miles and hundreds of trucks and they found no advantages to using them.

I have a 99 chevy 5.7 with 413,xxx miles on it and all its had in it is oil. Sometimes it was what auto parts store had on sale. No synthetic , does leak and uses some.

Like Billy Shafer said maintenance is key to keeping a 5.3 happy.

Between lifter issues associated with the active fuel management and problems with the fine mesh screen under the oil pressure sender, dirty oil is a real bad thing for your engine.

Although Lucas products have a good reputation, spending your money on more frequent oil changes will likely benefit your engine more than an additive will.

The trucking companies that did those tests also traded their trucks off at 400,000 - 500,000 when the warranty ran out. My trucks ran 1,250,000-1,500,000 miles before any internal engine work.

Good quality, name brand motor oil already contains all of the necessary additives. There are people who get paid to figure out those things. Why try to outguess them?

About the only good you will get out of an additive is to swell leaking seals, as in front and rear main, maybe help with valve guide seals, maybe...

I've had good success with Lucas power steering leak stop, never tried the engine or transmission treatment, but it did stop leaking rack seals.

If you think the additive is going to help your engine life, you should have been using it from day one.

My international ran a million with no signs of quitting when I traded it for a new one. No additives were used. Many trucks run that long without additives. They never found any evidence of longer engine life from any additives or synthetic oils. They did find significantly higher failure rates when extended oil change intervals and synthetic oils were used.

Bought the truck with 101,000 miles on it
already.want to make it last and that?s why I asked
the question.i will continue using good quality
synthetic.was looking for a experienced opinion and
I got it .thanks all

Hello rrman61,

113.000 miles and no issues. You did not say if you are starting to use oil? You can't fix what is not broken!

Guido.

Hello rrman61,

If makes you feel better, you can put high mileage oil in it. But 100.000 miles is not really high mileage,

Guido.

I had a questionable experience with Lucas power steering stop leak. Chevy dealer said we had to replace the steering sector on out 2010 impala. $1,100 repair bill. I bought some Lucas stop leak and topped off the reservoir. The leak never really stopped, but when it got cold in Dec. the stuff got real thick like STP and would not flow thru the filter and would starve the pump so you could not steer the car until it warmed up for a while. Then the high pressure line from pump to steering sector started leaking real bad. Replaced the line and drained what oil we could out of PS system. The line burst where it connected to the steering sector, and I suspect that was the source of the leak all along. We also caught the Chevy dealer red handed installing after market parts and billing us for genuine GM parts that were supposed to have a lifetime warranty that they would not honor. (That is another issue of it's self)------------------------Loren

My winter vehicle is a 99 Hoe with 200,000 miles and have never added anything to the oil.Always changed at 5K. Motor has never been opened. Plugs at 100K and 200K. Windshield, door handle, Downstream sensors, couple of belts and headlights. That's all.

I wouldn't mind having a 99 Hoe. Even with a lot of miles. New headlights you say? Nice.

Your oil, if it's good oil, should have all the additives it needs, unless you've got some serious sludge or stuck rings. There MIGHT be some products to help that.
The owners of Lucas stadium really appreciate people buying the stuff, though.

High mileage oil was already mentioned. If you have some oil consumption, or minor seal leaks, those are two of several things HM oils help with . They help fight wear and sludge more too.

Most standard oils are sufficient but they are kind of like a "one size fits all" oil type for a broad selection of engines, new or old. HM oils are taking the extra steps to help specific concerns you might have with higher mileage engines. Do you need it? no. Does it help? yes. Will it hurt anything? no.

Guy i used to drive for was bad about buying salesmans bs.he changed from shell rotella 15/40 to dennis oil company extended interval 15/40.
That was a joke we changed oil via gallon to thousand miles, engines held 10 gallons thus change at 10000 miles.this new snake oil reccomended 20000 miles.when the engines hit 11000 miles they started using oil. It was breaking down.. Salesman was telling about l0cal b9g company was using it.i asked a mechanic 1 day,he said we went back to rotella,10 rebuilds at 500000 miles not good

Bingo! Nothing wrong with Lucas products and they can help with worn engines, etc. But with a low miles vehicle you're worlds ahead changing oil and filter a little more often and using a good grade of oil.
