Seems there are a lot of untrainable folks in MN for jobs there, talked to a friend of mine yesterday that owns a landscape company. He says he can't keep help paying them
$20 hr.On the job training putting down mulch, planting trees, weed eating, riding a Zero Turn mower etc etc.No drug test but he does require help show up sober and show up regularly.

He needs to add a computer screen to the end of the shovel and make up a serious sounding title for them

I have no control over the unemployable, but you can come and get them! That's another reason we have unfilled jobs and unemployment, people won't move. I had to move twice to stay employed.

Same problem here in central NY. As strange as it sounds. Wal Mart is flying in warehouse workers from Florida, SC and California. They pay them a $1,500 bonus to come here, and they put them up in hotels, bus them to and from the warehouse each day. WM tried working with the state workforce development program which basically forced workers who applied for unemployment to pursue the jobs available at WM. These people did about everything they could to get fired. WM Distribution food division where my son and DIL work was taking on 30 new hires per month from the state program, and maybe 1 or 2 would stay, and pay is in the $20/hr. range.
There is a class of people today that think that they should have everything handed to them with no effort on their part. It is time that they put their hats on straight and pulled their pants up.

If they don't want to travel as far they can come to the Detroit area and do about the same work with about the same requirements. Although my son starts them out at only 15 bucks per hour. He is always looking for reliable people that will actually come to work everyday and be on time doing so at his landscape company.

This was the surprise my wife's former employer (before she retired) found out when they opened a manufacturing facility in St Louis. They figured with the unemployed there it would be easy to find help. They found out the reason for the high unemployment. They just didn't take actually showing up for work very seriously.

Their unemployment or welfare check may not equal $20/ hr. but all they have to do is walk to the mailbox for it. Probably live at home so Mom will bring it straight to their bedroom cause they?re not even up yet, late night of video games.

A very simple reason that many will not work is government hand outs/benefits to them. I have a family renting a house in town from us. They keep the house nice and are great renters. They have four kids. They both worked when they started renting the house. Neither one of them work full time now. He straight up talked to me about it. The cost of child care was so high that during times that school was out it eat up the majority of one of their incomes just for child care. Then the driving to Dubuque or Cedar rapids for better jobs was an expense.

Their kids qualified for the low rate lunches at school when they both were working. This got the Human Service department to sent them all the information on the various programs. They set down and figured out what they could qualify for. It turns out when they looked at paying their own way after all the income taxes and SS that they could have the same standard of living with him only working part time at a minimum wage job here in town. So she quit her job and he also quit his $22 an hour job on Cedar Rapids. He now works at the gas station for $12 and only 30 hours a week. He refuses over time too. He said that if he makes $50 in over time it costs them $150 in public benefits. The over time Jumps their income over the levels that max out support.

Asked a Mexican why he works. He will tell you that in Mexico if you do not work you do not eat. PERIOD. I am willing to bet that China and India are the same way too. I am for support for those that truly can not work but that is a darn small percentage of those drawing these days.

Let the Mexicans in, they will work hard.

Number one issue to growth in this country is an adequate work force.

JD Seller,

That is exactly what many people are doing here too... living out of our pockets, by their choice - NOT due to disability, NOT due to lack of "Help Wanted" signs.

YES, there ARE truly down-trodden folks who need a "hand up" for a bit... but people should not be living-out generational cycles of "hand-outs" that come out of the pockets of those who do work for a living.

(quoted from post at 15:50:32 10/06/19) A friend owns a smoothie king.
I was talking to him about workers.
Told me he does not ask that you do intergenic work while you are here.
He is happy if you just show up for work on time.
I don't think intergenic means what you think it means.

I was just talking about this yesterday at the farm with some family. I'm in the same boat trying to find help for our roofing company. I used to think most of these guys just need a chance and an example set for them. The "give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish" thing. My Uncle said "Yes, but they have to WANT to learn to fish".

Cut all this government aid off to all but actual needy people, cut incenitives to depend on government. Welfare was for widowed with children.
Then comes farm payments.that put wind in big time operators sails. But thats my opinion
Few days back went to eat brekfast ,2 bto guys were discussin that money.

Tim ..... I think it was just a spelling error, he likely meant "energetic" work as in hard or difficult work, etc.

David I am all for LEGAL immigration and it should be from all over the world not just the easiest river to walk across. Build a wall, stop illegals. THEN make immigrating here LEGALLY easier. Also put a time limit on how soon immigrants can draw on social services. I totally support people coming for a job but not a government hand out.

Perhaps you are correct. Difficult to say. Before I post anything, I reread what I've typed to see if my message is understandable. Saves wondering.

The data gathered by our government indicates that there is very little illegal immigration by walking. The vast majority is by air and water. Why do you think a wall across the southern border will help solve the problem? Also, only legal immigrants are eligible for any benefits at all, and then only after 5 years and specific requirements have been met. We are already doing as you suggest.

John I need to get out more!!! LOL I had to look up Smoothie King on Google. Had not heard of them before.

Woman I know was working as a receptionist for minimum wage for 30 hours a week, and her husband was drawing unemployment. Her boss have her a raise, she ended up giving the check back and asking to stay at the old rate- The raise would have caused them to lose more than that in benefits.

There's somethin' wrong here. . .

I agree, we need a controlled border, and a realistic and well enforced work visa program. Give them a card, give them a number, make them pay taxes and keep track of them. The green card system works pretty well. Learn from it and design a new system. But we Americans have put up with 40 years of NO policy because, like everything else we are not willing to compromise, meet in the middle, and get it done.

Can you imagine not planting a crop for 40 years because you and the boys could not agree on little details?

Have you heard benefit/program cuts proposed by either side?
Eastern KY, only 37% of working age men are in the workforce.

30 million adult Americans read and do math at the 3rd grad level.
Do we want them dispensing the medications to the patients?

It is a complex problem, but I can't find a proposal to fix it from either side.

Did you guys see what the city of ny did last week? Insanity. They are NOT kidding.

Yes David. My construction trade is looking south, to fill future jobs. We can't get enough apprentices on board to fill the amount of jobs available in the STL area. Good wage, health insurance, pension. Go fig.

Mexicans have an excellent work ethic.

When I was flying, it was night and day difference between the way the ramp worked in Mexican outstations vs. the US.

In the US it seemed we were greatly inconveniencing our ramp employees and forcing them to go outside and do some work. Two or three would come dragging out and finally get us parked and start throwing bags. This wasn't at every outstation but many of them.

In Mexico when we pulled onto the ramp we were met by the guideman, two wing walkers, someone manning the GPU power ready to plug us in, at least two just to pull bags, the station agent, a cleaning crew and security personnel (at least two and sometimes three). It ran like a well oiled machine. This was at every Mexican destination I went to.

I am spending money to help keep illegals out. Our church has for years been supporting a member who is a missionary in Honduras where gangs run wild, and pray on single young mothers whose children are the product of rape. He has dozens of young men in the church in whose lives he has intervened who are leading productive lives instead of joining gangs.

20 per hour, but seasonal, little or no work in the winter, no insurance, no 401k. A $15 per job, not seasonal, with a 401k match is better, imho. I ve been on here for awhile, and it seems that some folks think others should work for pay and conditions, that they would never accept.

Well actually not true this guy stays pretty busy year round,he also is in the snow removable business in the Winter. Its a good job for young guys starting out who need all the cash they can get not retirement plans that'll probably be long gone before they retire anyway.
