Looks like work in the kingdom

My boys were over and asking about some farm raised beef and pork. I mentioned all the work left to do before that could happen, such as fencing and work in the barn. Then today this showed up.

Boys said they are coming next weekend to put up fence. They are bringing a post hole digger too. I hope they understand just how much work is involved in putting up a new fence. Lol. Plus now I'll have to get to working on the barn too. And I was just thinking about taking a few easy days. Lol

Show some finished pics, I don?t have the cows anymore, just chickens, but I was thinking of modifying the cow pasture, cow shed or barn to raise a few pigs? Just something that I?m thinking about doing. Probably have to get another freezer steer in the near future too. Almost out of the last one I put in the freezer. If like to see some ideas for housing feeder pigs.

This fencing will be for cows only I think. Don't think I'll raise many hogs. Any pigs will be raised in the barn. Going to build some pens in there for some, just enough to get some pork for the family. Maybe in the future I'll out enough in there to keep the barn warm over winter.

That?s what my friend does just keeps 3 pigs in a pen in the barn, probably better than putting them outb on pasture I guess. Maybe I would have to pour a concrete floor in the cow pen, the clay floor was fine for the cows, but I thought pigs root a lot? Oh well just another learning experience!

Jay if you keep the dirt floor bedded real deep the hogs will not root much. By deep I mean at least 8" or deeper. The bedding will be drier on a dirt floor. Drawback to dirt is every time you clean out a little dirt goes with it. A cement floor is easier cleaning and more sanitary if you want to clean and disinfect between batches.

Thanks, could I put rubber mats over the dirt floor?
Bedding the dirt floor 8 inches would not be a
problem either, I?m only 6 miles from a place that
makes and sells pine shavings.

Is it dry enough there to auger holes? It has gotten relay wet in N MN, if you dug a hole it would fill up with water immediately! I doubt if it's feasible to farm raise hogs, given the price of feed and you can buy pork in the supermarket for <$2. But, if you raise them there's less steroids and antibiotics.

2 X On think it over if you really can feed your own hogs for less than the price of pork in grocery stores? Include the price to of butchering at a local locker and total up your labor for feeding, watering, bedding, grinding feed and hauling manure it could get expensive for a small number of animals. I like hogs, but when I'm loosing money on them I do notice they start to smell a little more.

Yeah, not a money maker, at least for now. I just want my own because I like it better.

Thanks, as I said they are great! I just hope it quits raining enough so we can get it done. Had a out 10" of rain in the last 2 weeks or so.

Nice family,,nice farm,,,and,,,,a nice king!!The very best to you all!!!My brother raises some hogs in his barn.Monday he is going away,Im gonna take care of them,I will post some pictures for you .The farm raised does taste better ,I agree with you.

I enjoy building new fence. It?s the tear out and clean up I don?t like. We just butchered 2 heifers. Hanging weight on the one we are keeping was 730. The one we sold was 600 which is about the right size for an urbanite. I start pushing corn to them pretty young so they are fat when they are smaller. Always have people lined up for our beef so must be doing something right!!

Don't do it, you will be spoiled by how good it tastes and you won't care how much it cost for good meat. LOL I raise my own pork and chicken. Fed some farm raised eggs to a friend she got this look on her face and said these eggs taste like chicken I laughed so hard almost peed myself. That is how eggs are supposed to taste and have orange yolks that don't run across the pan when you break them.
