Eyeball level.

Going to get the rotating laser and see how level it is. I left some gravel along sides to fill with.

I'm slow but feel like I'm winning.

It's low on the left! No, it looks fine. I have used a hose for my last couple of buildings, a water level was good enough for the Egyptians, it's good enough for me!

Sir George; You held the camera off level by 2.030 degrees, so I can't tell from here without excessive calculations.
The contractor will certainly appreciate not having to work in sticky mud.

What kind of rotating laser level do you have? I'm trying to level up the subgrade for pouring a shop floor and have a garage sale special laser level (Craftsman, not rotating), but have trouble seeing the light on my rod. Maybe some others have stronger lights?

It's flat. Nothing wrong with eyeball. Just had my head tilted 3 inches. You're right 3 inches higher on right and 2 inches higher in middle.

why do you want it perfect level you need for the rain to get off not just pond on it. work it down, first rain will tell you will have to always be grading it some anyway

You need a receiver on the rod which will "beep" when the receiver is at the same level as the laser and picks up the laser signal. You set the receiver on the rod so that when the receiver is able to pick up the laser signal the bottom of the rod is at the grade you want.

Rain, how about artificial rain? Water is the best level. It will reveal the low spots and wash the fine powder in between rocks below

Looks nice. Water will help a lot but are you going to rent a vibrating compactor at some point?
Ya, keep posting with pictures. I am down with my back so enjoying your updates.
Regarding concrete, the two large projects I saw locally put a rebar grid on 3? centers. But that is here in WI. I wish I could remember what the mix was, 5000 or 6000#. One was a large area between a house and barn. The other was for a shed with a 60? x 128? shed with a 60? x 40? shop on one end. Just the shop got concrete.
Thanks again.

Why do I want it perfectly level?
Because each 1/4 inch is a yard of concrete. Last time I bought concrete it was around $100. What is it now?

Glad you know about that water level. The water levels of today are so easy and all you need is a little vynil hose. A couple of drops of food color helps. Amazing how something so simple can be so accurate. Now the Egyptian guys had little coffer dams around the entire site. They would then fill the entire area with water like a giant swimming pool but only maybe an inch deep. You just chip off anything that sticks above the water. That hot sun lowers the level a little at a time and you just keep chipping till everything is dead level.

My receiver beeps constantly when it level with the rotating laser. Beeps faster when you are approacing level. Arrows shows if you are above or below.
