farmall 140 radiator with 404 engine

I put a 404 engine in my grandfathers Farmall C . Neither the C or 404 radiator would work , I was advised that a 140 radiator would work. I bought the cheapest new one I could find and it did work. Now the tractor runs hot, if I put the grill and hood on it is into the hot range. Without them it runs just into the hot side of normal. Does anyone know if a 140 radiator is just inadequate to cool a 404 engine or did I buy an inferior radiator.
Thank You for any help
Steve

The only way I could determine the correct rad, would be to compare the 2 original rads capacity. Then find one that is compatible with the larger engine (doesn't matter WHERE it comes from), add 15% cooling capacity and find one that is close to fitting in the slot. HTH

To help understand how short of cooling capacity you may be, what are you doing with the tractor, driving it around unloaded, working it a little, or pulling it hard?

If used a 404 engine in a C (i.e with no water pump) then the holes in the cylinder head gasket are too small to allow good circulation in a thermosiphon tractor. (i.e. head gaskets are differant in water pump versus non water pump tractors.

two factors. The 404 is a 40 hp tractor and the C is 23 hp. The waste heat issue will not go away. moving dramatically more air through the 140 radiator will fix it enough.
Junk yard source a pair of fans from a 2001 Subaru. They are small enough to fit two of them, and cover quite a bit of the area. Wire them to a single thermal switch in the temp sending unit hole, or other access to coolant temp. Remove the standard fan and gain a horse power or two. Jim

I run it wide open for about an hour to finish mow 7 acres with a mower requiring 35 pto hp ( that is why I put the 404 engine in Grandpas C ).
Thank You for the reply
