Patz silo unloader

My son hauls an Amish fence crew and one of them just got two 16ft silos to tear down. He says they have good unloaders in them and we can have them. What do you need to change on a Patz surface drive unloader to go from a 16 ft silo to a 14 ft? I have a Badger now that is just wore out and thought this might be a good replacement. Tom

Its been a long time, but if I remember right the unloader is built in sections that come off in even increments. I bought an 18 and I just removed a little section of the main frame and shortened the chain. It just unbolted The drive for the wheels had predrilled holes like a tie rod end in a 4020. Al

In that size range, it is a matter of just sliding the unloader together, but that can be like adjusting a wide front end- might go easy, might require some 'effort."

PArts for those are also made by the Graetz company in Pound Wi. They were the original source for Patz, but Patz ditched them for China about 20 years ago. So there are parts options galore. Sadly, I have noticed the Chinese steel oftentimes wears better than the US fabricated stuff, though!

Then again, making a bag might be a lot better alternative. No climbing, etc.

Just looked in the parts catalog... there is one set of the frame for 12-16 ft, one from 16-20. So they could be either design. One is going to be a little simpler to get to 14 foot.

I only feed about 30 steers and in the summer the silo keeps better than a bag. The unloader just peels up a nice even layer and with a bag I get to much disturbance when scooping. Winter feeding is out of a bag. What I do is fill the silo and start feeding out of it untill real cold weather sets in. Then feed a 7x100 ft bag and then go back to the silo next May. Gives me good packed feed that stays good during hot weather. I feed haylage year round with the first crop going in the silo for summer early fall feeding and the rest is baled to sell. We feed a bag of rye as well. The haylage keeps good as I have limited pasture so the moma cows get haylage-ryelage all year. I do not like feeding hay as they seem to waste so much and with silage they clean up all of it. Did you find Patz parts listing online? Never thought to even look. I will get a book before I start the project. Thanks Tom

Hey is your blower still good in your badger? Ours lost a paddle one day and took out the shroud and one side of the blower. Patz isn't like the badger where the same unloader will work in a 14 or 16 foot?

We had one in a 20? years ago. Have a look at it but I think the others are right. You should be able to ,depending how badly their seized, adjust the frame in along with the surface drive wheel drive shafts and about 2? of gathering chain will need to come off.

I will not get it put in untill next fall when the silo is empty and we will keep the Badger parts to use on the other silo that also has a Badger in it. Tom
