560D Transmission Issue ??

I just acquired a 560 D while buying a new house in Montana. I decided to try to fire it up today . It has 6000 hours on it. I do not know much of the history other than it was bought new in 1959 and has sat around for at least 5 years. I own an old diesel truck so I have general diesel knowledge. I cleaned the tank and filled with fresh diesel.. I installed a new group 31 battery. The engine cranked slow and I found out that the solenoid ontop of the starter is worn out. Next I figured I would pull start it . While pulling I noticed that the fan on the engine is not turning, and it doesn t seem like the engine is cranking. I cannot hear or see the engine sucking or blowing air. The transmission seems to shift fine but I think something is out of adjustment or broken in the clutch or transmission area. Like the engine isn t engaging the transmission. I had the TA all the way forward. Maybe a broken crank ? Any ideas or things to check would be helpful. Thanks !
 
maybe clutch disc is worn out, maybe that's why it was parked. but you need glow plugs working and fast cranking to start them. fuel filters should have been changed and bled while at it. oil change. highly dought its a broken crank on those engines. also what gear do you have the tractor in while pulling it?
 
Thank you for your response. I did change the filters and bled using the hand pump located just upstream of the filters. I think the injector pump is stuck because I am not getting fuel to to the injectors. It has a statadyne pump which does not seem to be original from my research.I tried pulling in every gear . While pulling I popped the clutch several times and the clutch definitely engages. It just doesn?t seem to engage hard enough to turn the engine over. Is there any way to adjust that clutch or does it mean splitting and installing a new one . The tractor seems to be in good shape . It sat outside but is complete . Thanks again
 
I know nothing about this tractor but on reading the post you mention moving the Torque Amplifier forward. On tractors like the Ford range with Dual Power, similar to TA, you need the engine running for there to be any connection between the engine and transmission. Just a thought.
 
T/A lever forward, high side, no free-wheeling, and 5th gear. Depending on how fast you can pull the
tractor, you might want to try 4th gear, but 5th gear reduces the stress on everything. Those D282
engines really need the glow plugs working to start. I've read where guys have modified the Beru ZD-11
glow plugs the 7.3L Powerstroke engines use to install them in a D282, the 7.3L glow plugs get so hot so
quick the D282 starts as quick as you touch the starter button.

Clutch of 560 is adjusted by pedal free movement. Unless the clutch is totally wore out it should grip
enough to turn the engine over.
 
Could have a T/A clutch pressure plate failure or the splines at coupling from clutch shaft to T/A unit is worn out. If the T/A
clutch doesn't hold it won't turn the engine.
 
Probably one of the hardest tractors to pull start. Even after you get the motor turning you are
going to need the glow plugs. Forget the pull starting and consecrate on getting the stater going.
Solenoid is not that costly and you will be time ahead. Take the air inlet off and spray a mixture
of 50/50 gas and diesel if you get it turning over should fire some anyway. Injector pump rack is
probably stuck.
 
So give up on the pull start and focus on cranking the engine with the starter ? Just wanted some opinions before I dump a money on the engine to figure out I have a major transmission issue . Thanks again for the thoughts . I?m not real familiar with clutches and TA on these tractors .
 
If the fan on engine is not turning, something is not driving the engine when pull starting. Could be TA, but not familiar with them. Other than that it could be transmission, or clutch.

Usually when pull starting in lower gears, the rear wheels will slip/skid due to mechanical advantage of engine/trans load.
 
Seeing as the tractor was left behind by the former owner, it probably had some problem that he was unwilling to repair. Could be just about anything. sometimes it is something simple that just became the one straw that broke the camel's back.

Either way, you basically got a free bonus tractor with the purchase of the house. It might be worth putting some money into it - especially if you have a use for it.

Personally, I think that pulling a vehicle of ANY type is the most dangerous and potentially destructive way to get an engine started. It could turn a small problem into a big one very quickly.
 
It will pull start easy enough - but you still need working glow plugs. Even if everything was in good working condition you could drag it a mile and it won't start without the glow plugs warming up. If the glow plugs are working you can have it started in 10' of pulling.
