Tractors ploughing in competition. Pictures

Local ploughmans association were running their ploughing competition today. I was on my way back from the feed store, so stopped in for a look. A few nice older tractors out ploughing, all with 2 furrow Kenvernlands ploughs. We have had a lot of rain over the last week, probably almost too much for the folks doing the ploughing, but a month ago they wouldn?t have been able to get a plough into the ground.

I ought to hold a plowing competition at dads place. Have a field that's had alfalfa in it for about 10 years now. You don't even leave tracks unless it's muddy! It's nice black Iowa soil, but it's packed! We ran the disc over it to put in some sorghum this summer and it hardly dug in. Definitely time for some deep tillage!

I went up to the farm yesterday, and dropped the plows in to test the waters, so to say. The ground is better than a month ago, when I first tried to plow this field, and we are getting light rain today, and weather watchers are saying heavy down pours tomorrow. About Sat. I will start fall plowing again.

With my back the way it is now, I have been modifying the seat and armrests in the 931, so I tried what I had built so far. Still needs a bit of tweeking. I had all new cushions installed on my seat shells by Speer Cushion several years back. They did a wonderful job on them, but the bottom cushion was so thick and plush, that the arm rests would not raise up enough to give me support for my arms and the small of my back, so I am building extension brackets to give me the support for my arms and back higher up where I need it. The suspension was also rebuilt so it works properly. Today I also ordered a inexpensive rear view camera and monitor like I have in my 440 to put into the cab so I don't have to set twisted around in the seat, to see what the plow is doing. Hoping these changes will allow me to be comfortable operating the tractor for 4-6 hrs. a day. Yea, I know real farmers drive tractors for 10-14 hrs./day, but I am volunteering my time and equipment to help out, so my only chore is to get the ground plowed. About 230A. The farm pays maintenance and fuel cost

This was second bout yesterday. The plow is covering trash much better than a month ago when I tried plowing here, and it was so dry. I am also back up in 4th gear where the plow lays nice smooth furrows.

Out of curiosity, if anyone knows, what are plowing contests judged on?

Straightness of furrow and coverage of trash I expect, but what else, if anything?

They were very lucky when they had the world ploughing contest near Baudette MN a month ago, it had been so dry you would of had trouble getting a plough in the ground. Then they got just enough rain to soften the ground, and it went well! Now it has rained over 6 inches since and all harvest is stopped.

Those guys are like a bunch of old women checking out a piece of hand sewn embroidery.
Each furrow should be a continuous ribbon of soil gently cut, lifted, and rolled over on to the proceeding one, with no visible variation from one round to the next. Also great attention is given to how the back furrows are laid to each other, and how the ends of the lands look. Lots of other tech. stuff such as depth in relation to bottom width, and how perfect the colters cut to form a perfect furrow wall. Much more I'm sure.

That case plow does a Far better level job of plowing than the others above,, we sold those Kneverlands all pull-types,, the semi-mounts must be a whole different animals as I know they use them in comps and some rave about them,, you could not give me one of them again, now that trip system was Great

Very nice! One of my uncles represented PEI many times in national competitions back in the 60?s through to 80?s and judged a lot of matches too.

I got 40 acres gumbo, hardpan, tiger crap and worse.ive seen our 52 A jd pulling 3x14 down 12 inches deep front wheels about 16 inches high all across the field. Every tractor earned its keep in that field.be a great test for them.its been in grass 15 years too
