Ford 3 cyl. HP??

I just bought a 3cyl. Ford diesel engine to re power a 4200 project I am going to start when the snow comes. This engine came from a 555 backhoe. I looked up the specs on it, and it is rated at 60 HP. When I was a kid Dad bought a new 3000 diesel in 1966 that was rated at 35-38 HP. How did Ford get 25 more HP out of the 201 engine when it only has a pinch more stroke then the engine used in the 2000-3000? Al

The engine horsepower on the 3000 with 175 ci is 47 at 2100 rpm.

The engine horsepower on the 4000 with 210 ci is 60 at 2200 rpm.

Normally aspirated diesel engines generally rate at about 17-18.5 hp per liter. Rpm and injection pump set up also affect horsepower.

The 201 ci diesel engine is only .2 liters more than the 175 cubic inch so pump and rpm do affect the horsepower.
The funny thing is that the Genesis engines in final form were a five inch stroke. Something that Perkins did years before.

How many hours are on that engine? It might be a good time to rebuild it while it's out. Those are good engines. My backhoe had 18,000 hours on it, with the tachcometer cable broken, so who knows how many hours it really had on it. Mine still ran ok but I rebuilt it anyway. They had a flat tappet camshaft and the lobes on mine were worn so I bought a new camshaft. If the compression is low, it will be hard to start in the winter.

The 66 4000 was only rated at 45 hp, not a lot more than the 3000's 175 engine.
In mid 68 Ford increased the port size in the head for more air flow and installed a higher lift cam as well, these changes along with a larger carb jet on gas models and inj pump recalibrations on diesels increased hp to 52 pto hp.
