went to look at a tractor today

took a 20 minute trip to look at an international 350. asked the lady how long she has had it. several years she replied. tires all looked good. had some sort of a make shift 3 pt. that seemed to work. pto seemed to work. starter button was bad so the used pliers to get it started. fired right up. sounded pretty good. went to turn the steering wheel and it moved 6/7 inches both ways before it started to engage. no power steering. when I said something about it she all of a sudden remembered there was a plug missing. now I don't know much about steering boxes but it seemed to me there was a problem. it had no TA or at least I couldn't find the lever on the right side which is probably a good thing. so after looking it all over I said thanks but I better pass. didn't want to make her an offer so I left. probably wasn't to bad of a tractor but the steering scared me. she was asking 1500 which probably wasn't to bad. if it would have had power steering I would have thought about it harder. oh well tomorrow is another day. have a good night to you all.

So, I bought this Ferguson TO-35 last year. It was not well taken care of by the neighborhood type guy owner. And the steering wheel turned each direction half way round before taking up the slack. But, it ran very smoothly so I took the chance. As it turned out the steering shaft lower thrust bearing was in pieces causing the slop. A time consuming but easy fix. I flushed and changed all the ancient fluids, and yes, it runs like a top.

"there was a plug missing"

From WHAT?

If it ran nice, and had GOOD tires and you NEEDED a "350", it was at least partway there @ $1500, IMHO.

Bob hard to call on that one. If it's a Farmall row crop 350 finding the stuff to fix or replace the gearbox shouldn't be that hard. If it's an IH 350 utility that can be a problem. Son in law's brother has one with a bad steering gear. NLA on parts according to him and he's had no luck finding a good used steering gear box.

I have given up on my 350U, it has power steering but it still
won't steer unless the front end is lifted with the bucket.
