Tractor won't restart

I have a 1950 ford 8n, Will start, runs great for however long, turn it off and two mins later will just crank and crank. Any thoughts on my issue here?
Thx

The cap electrode being worn will not make a good connection for the spark to travel. I would check the coil next time you shut it down or it dies see if it is hot.

Ben.
The original tank on Jubilee had coating flaking off, so I installed a clear see through inline filter. After gas in tank got to 145 degrees, you could see the fuel stopped flowing through filter and in a minute or two, tractor's carb ran out of gas and it died.

The heat from exhaust manifold and radiator warmed the gasoline.

Good visual clue of VAPOR lock. As the gas cooled, you could see filter filling with gasoline. Then tractor would run again.

I guess the two things you need to check for when it won't start is spark and fuel. It's gotta be one or the other. If there's spark at the plugs, the problem is no fuel.

I once knew a ford flat head V8 that would do that and it was because it had almost no compression. Had to cool off and the oil thicken I guess and then it would start.

FIL had a Farmall A like that, you could start it by towing it, but wouldn't start with the crank when warm. I was told it could be valve adjustment, but it was sold to someone who got it running well, not sure what he did.

I can remember sometime ago reading in the problem pages of car mechanics magazine about someone having problems starting his car when hot but I cannot
Remember the answer as it was quite technical
It was something like atoms in a hot cylinder would prevent spark jumping
I also remember my late uncle saying that fordsons would never start when hot or to use his own words
The buggers would never start when hot so you might as
Well go and do something else and come back then it would start up straight away

The early 1950 Ford 8N had a front mounted square can ignition coil. Very troublesome. Usually required 4 or more hours to restart. At serial number 263844, the system was changed to a side distributor and coil. Not so troublesome after that.

Fill in the blanks. 6 or 12 volt?? is it an early 8N with front mount distributor or the latter 8N with side mount distributor?? Next learn the simple trouble shooting for an engine.
#1 does it have a good blue white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more at the plug wires and if the late 8N at the center wire of the distributor??
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes.
#3 when was the last time you checked the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water and fill it with fresh gas?
#4 pull the air cleaner tube off the carb and hold your hand over he air intake and try to fire it up. You should both get a good suction and your hand should be covered with gas and it may even try to start

My jubilee carb has a drain plug on bottom of carb bowl. Open the plug and see if you have a constant flow of fuel.

I dissagree with you about the square coil being troublesom. Never in the 75 years of having this tractor did the coil ever cause any problems. When it started having running problems I took out that stupid resistor and no more problems. It is now running same voltage to points as either Farmall or John Deere did from moment mag was gotten rid of and distributor installed. So I don't by the argument about full 6 volts burning points.
