When you get into some taller grass for hay, it will do much better.
Short stuff tends to stay on the cutter bar like it was doing for you.
Taller gas will fall back and slide right off the cutter, but you probably know that.

I was hoping that was the issue. It seemed to cut good! Was looking in the manual and may need to adjust the guards and blades. Best I can figure that involves a small hammer?

Warning!! Be sitting when they tell you the price of that cable we had to get one for our 456 trailing mower I thought it was crazy. On the other hand it's almost impossible to make one and get the length exactly right to work perfectly.

Looks like the end of the bar may be trailing a little, check the lead to see if the end of the bar is a couple inches ahead of the base.
In short grass speed helps move the cut grass over the bar, with that 5 spd trans you should be able to cut heavy hay in 3rd and anything else in 4th.

Grandpa, I know that you are in the sunny south, but don't you have fairly high humidity? Drying grass down to dry hay takes the right conditions. most hay producers mow with a mower conditioner in order to reduce drying time. Here in the northeast we all use tedders to fluff it. A really big factor is the moisture in the ground.
