My knee and back have been hurting a lot since Labor Day and went to a "physical therapist" for possible relief. They took X Rays of my knees and back for diagnosis. Upon review, they said L-5 and S-1 were a big problem for the pain and recommended 50 decompression treatments at 2 per week = $7500 ! Any thoughts ?

Limp or Run Away ???

PS: Had John T work up my will at the recent Half Century of Progress but haven't used it yet! LOL

My wife and I have had inversion boots and now (a much easier solution) an inversion tilt table. I used it, but don't need it. My wife uses it 2 times per week for 3 to 8 minutes. She would not do it if it didn't help. Jim

geez jim id be careful with messing with your back or spinal cord. my local doctors almost put me in the cemetary. get yee to mayo clinic and have em look you over. you can even bunk with jon f up there in minni soter.

Went to a chiropractor seems to help, I have a broken L4 L5 and severe spinal stenosis and bulging discs.

Back in 96 I had to have surgery on the L-5/S-1. With out surgery I would not be able to use my left leg and I now have my leg back but in pain 24/7

I have an inversion table and it helps. It decompresses the spine. The key is to use it on a regular basis for sustained help. You can find one used, generally for a good price.

L5 I get but S1? I got those treatments on suggestion from my orthopedic surgeon but it was called DRX. I think it's the same thing. Got it at the PT office where I did rehab for the shoulder replacement. Twice a week for six weeks. Worked well, back and hips didn't hurt all summer. However.... with Medicare it was only $10 extra per session. Good deal since it worked. Usually the physical therapist works on orders from an orthopedist, you don't just walk in. I'd question that guy's methods.

I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a .....

Since they are in that business, i would run from this as it will rely upon normal healing process with some therapy to manage the pain. Just about everyone with some age will have some problems that show up on ex-ray as early stenosis etc. A mri will show real problems and progression.

The problem is... due to risks associated with surgery, they will NOT do anything till it has progressed to a certain point, otherwise your wasting your time and money. Until then, steroid shots, efa's and other methods are about your only relief.. Younger people can benefit from physical therapy to strengthen the back, old people, not so much as it will make it worse in most cases. NSAP drugs that reduce inflammation will be your friend.

I was lucky enough to get a great surgeon who did a 1 inch cut and removed the material pinching the nerves on my right side. Checked in a 5 am and out by 3am, with six weeks of restricted recovery at home. However he said there are many types problems that are not "fixable" as mine were.

With no MRI,,, your throwing darts at the wall.

Yup, just go straight for the drugs. Don't bother trying to exercise or anything... It's no wonder there's an "opioid crisis" in this country.

You realize for every one person who claims physical/exercise remedies made things worse, there are 999 others who it has worked wonders for?

Good Morning Jim
Was wondering about you the other day . Haven t seen you posting for quite a spell , now I know why , with back problems you don t feel like it .
Hopefully the Doc. s can come up with a solution to help you .
My Wife has R/A & since the opioid crisis they took her off all pain meds .
Now She takes High CBD Oil & a Shot Of Jack Daniels Honey or Jack Daniel Fire
to help with the pain . I told he r to do what ever it takes , at her age She probably be Dead before becoming an Alcoholic ,DRs, Said ok do it

Inversion tables work -- they dont need to be fancy infact the ones that use cloth for a back rest are the best . The fancy ones with the molded plastic back rests dont do any thing more for you and in the end are much heavier for moving around. Dont over do it at the start - work up to the increasing angles gradually ESPECIALLY if you are a heavy weight . Best to use the table just before bead time as the spine will remain stretched out for the night and will relive the pinched nerves better. This machine will do every thing for you that an expensive clinic visit with a traction table PLUS it is much cheaper and available at home when you need it rather than a long drive in a car when in agony .
Anti inflammatory drugs work as well as opiod (sp) drugs -- not that you need permission from these bunch of cowboys but this is some thing that you need to talk to your Dr about . Opiods are addictive -- some people are more prone than others. Back pain can get to the point where it is intolerable --- what kind of life is that . Follow you Dr orders for pills and quanity / time

You can get a good quality inversion table for 2 or 3 hundred bucks and it will do every bit as much good. Plus, you can invert in your own home and on your won schedule. I am about the only retired LEO I know of with zero back troubles, and I credit the use of the inversion table completely.

I d be real suspicious of a 50 treatment regime. How would they know that 50 treatments would be enough.? Seems like a money grab.

I have had lower back trouble for years. Usually about every 5 or 6 years I will have a spell of it. Last time I laid down on the ground and son in law tied a strap around my ankles and hoisted me up with a wrecker. I hung there 3 or 4 minutes and wiggled around some. When he let me down and I got up the pain was almost all gone.
