Troubleshooting refrigerator (update)

Posted about my barely cooling refrigerator. Thanks for all who answered. After much observation, temperature readings, etc. I have reached the conclusion that refrigeration system is just not keeping up. Compressor is running its little heart out. I believe it is either a weak compressor or a loss of refrigerant. Condenser coil is barely warm even after prolonged running times.

New refrigerator will be delivered in the morning. New one is pretty much the same as the old one. Unfortunately, what we wanted was only available in the same brand. 20.5 cubic foot, stainless, top freezer, plane Jane model. But that's what the kitchen lady wants. We did get 7 years out of the old one. Stole icemaker to transfer to new unit. On the bright side, this one was almost $300 cheaper than the old.

Good choice on replacing unit. 7 years just don't seem right though. Our first one lasted 13 years (Kenmore-Sears), and my pal who serviced that stuff said "replace it, it will cost more than a new one to fix" - good advice.

Iffen ya ever try the freezer on the bottom... you'll never go back. No standin' on yer head to find what's in the bottom of the fridge... nor standin' on yer head to clean the fridge.

Just my thoughts.

Good luck with your new fridge. :)

I hear you
Just replaced a top of line Frigidaire; 9 years old
With new top of line Whirlpool for only $1,953.

Hello RayP(MI),

You stated that the compressor was warm to the touch, that means that low refrigerant should not have the issue. If it was low, the lack of refrigerant would have made the compressor get hot, as cool returning refrigerant helps keep it cool. Sounds like it was stuck on the defrost cycle. An amps reading of the defrost circuit, may have told the story. If it's a mechanical one, cheap and easy to replace. You may safe it as your garage beef refrigerator,

Guido.
