JD 60 shifter trouble

Hello, I have a John Deere 60 S/N 6012258 with a gear shifter issue. It can be shifted and driven but if you don't pay attention the shifter will work it's way up and pop out of gear. I can pull it straight up and move it freely without it switching any gears. Now I'm assuming that there is a collar or pin or snap ring or something loose or missing. I would love to fix it but I'm a little gun shy when it comes to transmission work. Can anyone tell me what I need to do or if it's an easy fix or if anyone has heard of this before. Thanks

You have to remove the shifter cover, there is snap ring on the shifter, its rusted away, clean up the groove and put on a new ring, sometimes if the groove is bad, ad a hose clamp below the ring.

It would be good to change the transmission lubricant. The snap ring may have broken and fell in. A snap ring in a gear might be trouble. Drain the lubricant while the top cover is off and check for a "fallen" snap ring.
