International T340

I am in the process of purchasing an international T340 crawler with the Drott 4in1 bucket. Current owner knows pretty much nothing about it as he inherited it through a relative's death. There's no battery in it at this time but from what I've researched, its originally a 6 volt system. I would like to at least see it turn over and possibly fire, but dont want to spend the money on a new battery for nothing. Is it possible to put a 12 volt battery in it or will that cause more harm than good? Also, I dont have a serial number. One more question, negative or positive ground? The ground cable appears to be the smaller of the 2 which leads me to believe its negative ground. Any help is appreciated.

Nothing on the tractor except for the generator and regulator are sensitive to voltage or ground. Odds are the charging system isn't working anyway, and it will be more economical to convert the tractor over to 12V with an alternator than it would be to fix the generator system if it needs anything more than wiring.

Put a battery in it and give it a crank. Just be ready to disconnect and have a fire extinguisher as it is very possible that critters have gotten to the wiring.

Will not hurt a thing to try to get it running with a 12 volt battery even being it was a 6 volt system as long as you don't run it a long time

12volt battery will work fine. just remember the 5 second rule. start it for 5 seconds and if it doesn't start wait 5 seconds ad try it again. this will minimize any damage to the starter. neg ground. I would recommend that if its has a gen and voltage reg unhook one wire from gen before you start just for safety precaution. I hope you have checked on parts for those. they say these not much out there for them. good luck.

If it's been outside there could be water in the cylinders, water in everything as far as that's concerned.

If it's a gas, pull the plugs, look in for obvious water. Some oil in the cylinders will help, but if there is liquid water it won't get down to the rings.

If diesel have some ready means to stop it in case of a runaway.

It's a lot easier to get liquid water out of the engine, hydraulics, gear cases before it's run through the system and emulsified. If the drain plugs are accessible, crack them loose, let any water drip until oil comes down.

Well, the nice part is it has 2 parts machines to go with it. Both disassembled, but complete. Tracks, frames, one running engine and a pile of other stuff

I know it's been ran within the last couple years. It belonged to a neighbor of mine.

Well, I stopped by the crawler and found the tag on the generator that says it's a 12v system. Going to take the advise of pulling the plugs and checking drain plugs for water, throw a battery in it and spray for the best. The deal was pretty much done seeing as my daughter bought the property and all its belongings so I'm not really out anything at this point.

No one to throw water on the fire but you will need the two parts machines . Those things were
probably not all that bad but when folks bought them they just tried to do too much with them. My
father owned an IH dealership and sold a bunch of them but sure did have a lot of repairs. I guess
getting it free you can not come out too bad but do not expect too much out of the thing.

I'm just going to use it to do some driveway grading, level a small section of my yard and clear a small lot for my boy to build a new home. Other than that not a whole lot of big jobs. The price was right so I could pass it up.

A good clue to the polarity, look at the primary terminals on the coil.

If + side is from the ignition switch, - side to the distributor, it's wired for negative ground.

(quoted from post at 17:27:42 09/18/19) Handy little machine if not abused. Any
of the parts for a diesel engine?

Not sure yet. I think they're all gassers but I'll check this weekend and get back to you.
