IH354 Hour Meter

IH354

I have an International Harvester 354 (Gas) and noticed the hour meter wasn't working. I started looking around and found that the "cap" is missing that keeps the plastic gear in place and spinning to make the hour meter move.

If I hold the gear in with a screwdriver it spins and works fine. I haven't been able to find anything to get it to hold in place and can't find the part online.

Anyone know a good fix or replacement part for this?

I suspect you may be missing a simple "Welch plug", commonly known as a "freeze plug".

Look at the hole, if it has a little "ledge" inside like in the photo below, and the tach gear can be pushed in to below that depth, that's all you need, a decent auto parts store will have Welch plugs available in a wide variety of sizes.

If not, a machinist could make a simple cap for it.
