So can the photo eye sensors going bad at the bottom of the door frames cause the remotes to not work but the door still work from the push button ?

Hello Mike M,

Push buttons would work if beam is broken. I am betting on the remote. Take a look at the remote's battery contacts. Overtime the get loose. of course you need to have a good battery too,

Guido.

Mike,
On time my sencors appeared to be working. One was red and the other green. I replaced the opener and used the old sensors instead of wiring in the new ones.

My door will open when I removed the green one from bracket. It just won't close and the red sensor will blink.

So if you think you have sensor issues just replace them or borrow sensors form another door.

I think not. The sensors interrupt door operation if there is an obstruction [or it believes one exists]. I've had cob webs disrupt it. Regardless, neither push button nor remote will activate the door if the beam is not intact. So, most likely the remote is the problem.

The sensors will only stop the door from coming down.

One side is the emitter, the other the collector. Typically the collector will have a light that changes color or comes on when the beam is seen. You can play with the adjustment while watching the light. Once the light is on or changes from red or amber to green, the signal is given to allow the door to come down.

If it works by the door control switch but not the remotes, the remotes are the problem. Try unplugging and reconnecting the opener.

If that doesn't fix it, be sure the batteries are fresh and properly installed. There is a "learn" process for programing them. Find the owners manual or go online and find it for your make and model. Go through the programing process for each remote. Follow the directions carefully, try several times.

It would be unusual for both remotes to fail at the same time. If there is no response from either remote, the problem could be in the receiver board in the opener.

Mom called me about this. I'll have to stop over and see what I can find. Dad used to be good at this stuff but since his stroke not so much. Dad may be right I just don't know ? He seems to think it is the one sensor as it does not light up.

If I remember right mine would work if I held my finger on the button. One of the eyes had a broke wire going to it. The spring was broke to our tenants never bothered to tell us. Surprised it didnt strip the gear or wear the motor out. I replaced the spring myself. Watched a YouTube video. It was wrong. Almost took my head off when I replaced the spring. Had to take the door apart to fix it as the door was stuck up.

The one at my mother's quit working right one time and I noticed that one side was aimed out. I just got it pointed at the other and it worked.

My Genie manual says if the safety sensor at bottom of door are not able to see each other the door will close using the wall switch, but not remotes. Things to check are have they been bumped so they cannot see each other, dirty lens, loose or broken wire. the wire on one of mine slipped loose on the opener itself. On mine both units have leds that illuminate under normal circumstances. the receiver unit led will flash if it is not seeing the transmitter on mine.

Well just got back from Moms place. Dad had one sensor off. His are old enough they can be unplugged from wires. I checked the wires for voltage 6 volts DC so this was ok from what I saw on you tube. Plugged the sensor back in hooked it back up and all works as designed. It may of gotten bumped and the wire connection was bad ? I have no idea ? but it all works now. I found out If a sensor is bad or unhooked your remote controls will quit working. You have to push the manual button in and hold it to close the door. The older they get the more of these unexplained mysteries I seem to encounter. Then to top it all off when I get home and close my garage door it comes back up and light starts blinking ! Ghost followed me home ? I did find a spider web had a leaf dangling from the door so I think that is what set it off.

I have a Genie door opener and for a few days a year if I try to close the door during the afternoon sun the door wont close until i block the sunlight from hitting the lens of the north sensor. I think there may be dust on the lens that causes a flare of light that blocks the sensors from recognizing each other. It is only for a few days a year so i haven't taken the time to move the affected sensor.
