TD6 62 Series

Hello all. I have been looking for a dozier for awhile for land cleanup. There is IH TD6 62 with a blade and a forestry cage. It's near home and the seller will deliver for free. Motor runs great. Good oil pressure, runs cool but it has a few issues I'm concerned about.
It will go forward and backward fine.
It only will steer to the left.
Depress the right break nothing happens.
He knocked off the exhaust and air breather with a stump that rolled over the blade. He replaced the exhaust and replaced the breather with a K&N filter.
I have no experience with crawlers and only started my research after watching the dozer run yesterday.
I did not pull back on both levers to see if the clutches are disengaging so it's possible that a clutch is stuck. The levers have a lot of free play.
I downloaded a manual on track inspection and plan to go back to inspect the tracks today. They are full of dried red clay and have a bit of slack.
The hydraulic lines are old and need replacing but it held the blade up for 5 min without bleeding down so I assume that it doesn't have a bleed down problem.
The owner thinks it only needs a brake adjustment but claimed it stopped turning right after sitting up for awhile so I wonder if there is a clutch issue.

What do ya'll think about the price of $4,000?

Thank you for your input.

A stuck steering clutch is quite common on a crawler that has been sitting. Trying holding the brake hared, and turning on the stuck clutch side. If you have to remove the steering clutch pack it will come out from the top. I don't know much about prices for the TD 6 tractors. Might look on the net for other sales. Might come down a little because of the stuck clutch. Stan

Keep looking for something a little newer or better condition.

That tractor will be a money pit IMO

Most likely the brakes are shot and will need replaced.
And I will bet the undercarriage is not much better.

Also Parts are getting pricey and harder to find.

O K Here is a 76 year old man,s advice. A 60+ year old dozer has the potential to become a fishing
weight quick. Here is how it goes, $ 4500.00 I can afford that, get it home find going to take
another $600 to fix a few little thing , no problem, then say the water pump goes out , o just
another $ 300.00 . Two or three more leaks and first thing you know you now have $6500.00 in the
tractor, then a final drive goes out. Are you going to spend another three grand or just junk it.
Have seen this to many times. Either wait till you can find something newer , even if you have to
spend more or forget it. I saw a nice power shift, td 7e dresser (ih) sell at auction last week for
$6750.00 with a six way blade and direct start.

Depending on how much land you are ?cleaning up?
would it be cheaper to rent a machine or hire it
done? And when your done with that will you have
much use for it?not trying to dissuade you just
looking at the big picture

With age comes wisdom, thanks for the advice. I've been hesitant to buy at auction. After Michael dozers went up in price around me.
I have a Kubota MS4700 with an FEL.
I put a tractor supply tooth bar on the bucket and used it to clear hedge bushes and such.
Last year I had a limb push the bottom radiator hose and broke the phenolic tank. There was no way to repair and no aftermarket part.
The radiator and shroud cost me $1000.00.
I did the work myself.
I have decided to let the tractor bushhog, plow, disk and plant and find something with a belly pan to do the land clearing.

It's 20 acres of large oaks, pine and cypress with a creek in the middle. Some big trees were blown down by Hurricaine Michael last year. I want to clear out the downed trees, scrub, hedge bushes, and move some dirt around. We also have about 20 acres of Pecan Orchard with grown up fence rows and a few tree stumps from blown over trees.

Had a TD6 years ago and had a problem like that is it took a major bit of work to fix it. Had to drop the track on the side that would not steer and open up the rear end and replace the brake/clutch parts

(quoted from post at 13:10:06 09/12/19) I agree, rent one or hire it done.....way ahead in the long run.

Yea that's why I'm on the fence. I have a lot on my plate and time is one thing you can't buy more of.
I do enjoy working on my own equipment and have bought a bunch of stuff other people would have scrapped and made it work, but still have a bunch of projects lying around.

rent one and move on, around here i've been renting a 750 case that is 90 horse, and weighs 22,000 lbs. for 385.00 a day. but it sure is one fast machine.

Thanks for the feed back. I've read your post for many years now and its helped me out more than once. With the old Ford 8N and Deere 1010. Glad I finally decided today I would create a post and see if I got any responses.

I have a TD6. Clutches are fun to replace. You better have patience and small hands. I fixed mine 10 years ago and its stuck again. It's going to stay that way until the other side sticks more than likely. If you like working on old equipment and are not in a hurry go for it if not and excavator will get alot done in a day. You have to move alot of dirt with a crawler to get a stump out.
