First Day of Fall Plowing

Well, I went up to the farm with my 931 and 8358 Case plow this afternoon. Gave the plow and tractor a good greasing and checked everything over. Then I headed for a near by field of oat stubble. WOW is the ground ever hard and dry. The oats were mudded in so to speak with the late cold wet spring. I dropped the plow in, and the old tractor had to get down and beller to pull the plow. The plow was turning up concrete like blocks. I made 3 passes and decided to wait for some moisture to soften the ground. It is still early so hopefully we will get some needed moisture to make plowing more efficient.

The last pic is looking out the RH cab door at the clods that the plow was breaking out. At least the bottoms scoured with no issues, as I didn't grease them up after finishing spring plowing.
I guess tomorrow I will go back to cutting firewood, and wait for some good ol soaking rains before trying to plow again.--------------Loren

Wow, high ground, well drained, clay/loam ? One spring I was helping my long time good friend with spring planting and it was hard dry ground, clay/loam, his IH 5-18 plow would not sink in. He had me weld old shares onto the existing ones, something I had never heard of before. I think I used 5/16" 7018 and turned the heat up, put some heavy welds on there and it seemed to work. We did get some rains at some point after and he was able to get plowing again, but that soil was real hard, I figured nothing would work.

Love the contrast and the Case colors in the photos, great seeing that tractor doing some grunt work !

The ground here is hard and boney. Lots of compaction from earlier in the year that never got dealt with. I have a Landoll disc-chisel (same as a Case SC9) and have been popping the big shear bolts on the shanks the past few weeks. Need some rain for a moist seedbed to plant wheat in. The ground has been worked but was very dry as of yesterday. Probably will plant around the 21st of this month if we get moisture.

I forget, what do you charge those gas trip bottoms with? So in dry, hard ground do you have to put more charge in them or just adjust a valve?

It?s been over 4 years since I?ve seen dry ground.

We?ve had 3 inches the past few days, and are forecast to get 2-5 inches in the next day. In a flood watch.

I remember in 2012 it got real dry in fall, after a wet spring. We had compacted yellow clay soil dried out. Could not get the plow in the ground, was using an IHC 720 4-18, new shares, angled it right, it would ride out of the ground and just shave an inch in the hard spots. It?s hardly ever dry here, so that was odd.

Dry like that, would be a nice time to get a shank machine in and bust up the ground. It would shatter when dry. Ripper or heavy chisel plow. They can have issues in super dry too, but they bust up the ground nice when it?s drier.

Also popular where the very heavy big Wisheck disks, they cut into the hard clay and turned it. Generally no one uses a disk here, they are Packers in wet clay.

Nice pics.

We were suppose to have a plowing be in my neighbor hood on the Sunday of Labor day weekend, but it was to wet, and we had two inches of rain since ! But you're friend with his 5-18's,does he have the deep suck setting on the plow, It's a eccentric bolt you give 180 degree turn, and buy deep suck IHC shares, guarantee it will go into a gravel road then!

For your conditions your case plow is doingg its best it looks.nice 930 too.see some coal pourin out the pipe

Yes that looks familiar to what I was up against couple weeks ago ploughing some hay ground that I had covered with manure. Ground is hard, changed the plough shears and persevered . Worked it down with the disc. Now it looks like it was rooted up by a bunch of hogs. Giving it another coat of manure this week, and I won?t have to look at it.

in my area, oats ground is always like that. In my personal opinion, no tilling in a crop is the way to go!

Paul; I agree whole heartidly with deep tillage equipment like a Deep V, but we have limestone bed rock a couple inches below the bottom of the furrow and that doesn't break up. It breaks equipment and brings up huge slabs of rock..
A little to our north where the ground starts dropping off to the river, there is real heavy clay ground and deep tillage every 2-3 years is essential. Deep ripping every year would create a mud hole the depth of the rippers during a wet harvest season.------------Loren

what you doing with ground ,why plowing going to leave bare ground in winter, I take you guys do not do cover crops

The Accumulator tank's bladder is filled with Nitrogen at 1250# pre charge, the other side of the accumulator is then charged to 1550# of hyd pressure and then a valve is closed to isolate the reset system from the plow's lift system. There were some places where the bottoms drew back a bit at these settings so I quit.---------Loren

I'm not actually sure if his IH 5-18 had that setting. He would have known for sure and would have done what you said. He passed in early '14, equipment was sold in '17 if I recall. I have photos of this plow in my field, I thought it did an excellent job. He told me he'd get 50 acres out of those welded on shares. They held up in these rocky soils too. I had never seen this done before and he was one that took good care of his equipment.

Will you plant this Fall or can you wait until next Spring after the freeze/thaw cycles mellow it out?

Jack; I did that just for you!!!!! We are going over to the Central NY Farm Progress Show at Lenlow farms at Denison's Corners tomorrow.----------Loren

He was, a farmers farmer so to speak. He planted the ground here for many years, I enjoyed working with him and helping him out wherever needed.
