Armstrong has to go.

For along time me and old Armstrong worked together on this old tractor but no more. my d-17 did away with Armstrong and what a relief. I guess these old arms are just getting tired. I remember when old Armstrong left the old cars, 4 in 1 air was replaced and that was like a dream come true. who knows maybe a cab with heat/air. boy am I getting soft or just old.

Armstrong can be remedied in many older tractors now with electric power steering- It was first used on some Saturn cars (the Vue, I think), now used on many and available in the after market. Much cheaper and more available than the old Charlynn systems, and you don't need a power steering pump. Do need 12 volts, though, and some length of exposed steering shaft somewhere.

All depends on the tractor. Some steer easy even with out power steering and some do not. My Oliver S88 steers almost as easy as my D-17 that has power steering

I have both extremes here. Possibly the heaviest steering tractor in Saskatchewan, the 730 Case with worn out steering column bushings and a dozer blade on the front. And at the other extreme is the John Deere 2140. Even with the front loader it steers so easy you can literally "throw" the steering wheel in the direction you want it to go. Or one finger in the spokes even with a bucket full of manure or a bale on the front. I would not have believed a tractor could steer so easy.

I've heard of a few guys that got a junk yard electric steering
system and made it work on their tractors.
But a couple had to change their tractors to 12 volts to get the job done.
