how loud should a Tractor be

Can anyone give some advise on how loud a JD 1020 should be when running. I have found that I need ear protection when I am with in 30 ft of it.

Gas or diesel? Around 1970 the Nebraska Tractor tests started monitoring decibel levels. I would look at tests of a similar but newer version of your tractor that included sound levels:
Test #1085 2030 diesel;
#1084 2030 gas;
#1147 1530 diesel;
#1191 2040 diesel;
and #1192 2240 diesel.

If you're talking about exhaust noise some say loud pipes save lives. If you're talking about other rattling and clanging you likey have issues.

Test #1085 2030 diesel, 97 dB(A);
#1084 2030 gas, 94.5 dB(A);
#1147 1530 diesel, 98.5 dB(A);
#1191 2040 diesel 96.5 dB(A);
and #1192 2240 diesel 98 dB(A).

OSHA has a limit of 90 dB over 8 hours. NIOSH has a limit of 85 dB over 8 hours of unprotected hearing.

If you have a smart phone, there are apps out there to make your phone into a reasonable decibel meter. Make sure to measure where you work, and at the throttle/loads you are measuring to. Measuring at the source of the sound is NOT what you are hearing 6' away.

Note that the decibel scale is not linear, but logrighmic. Meaning......a shift from 80 to 90 decibels is a lot louder than you think.

Take care of your ears. You can buy hundreds of really good mufflers for the cost of a decent set of hearing aids these days.

ith my MF275, more noise come from all those gears on front of engine and balance shaft drive than exhaust....by far.

I just completed the company mandated safty class on PPE safty for your hearing. They recomend basically the same thing I do when I am shooting and when I drive even my garden tractor. These are two types of in ear plugs. The sponge ones are very good and when I run my garden tractor I ALWAYS wear them. The other type are a multi use type of plug. You can wash these as where the sponge type get dirty. When shooting I would wear the in ear type AND the over ear muffs. Durring target shooting it works wonders to preserve your hearing. PLEASE wear hearing protection!!!!!

Since you think you have to ask this question, you better buy your self a head set with radio, tune it to your favorite radio station and turn volume to a comfortable level so you can't hear the tractor.--Loren

My little John Deere 1020 gasser with factory muffler is the loudest tractor I own. Earsplitting. And next is the Ford 2000 diesel. Also earsplitting. The big ones are quieter for some reason.

I agree with the ear protection. I only have 60% hearing. But That tractor should not be that loud. Sounds like either no muffler. somebody has removed the guts of the muffler or has the wrong muffler. You might be able to go to a muffler shop and get a lot quieter one than was factory from a car that would fit, also is it possible to mount a small resonater type of muffler in line with yours. Cars years ago used that setup. Very likely that if factory muffler is a straight thru type, no baffles to slow the exaust and break down the sound. I think if you look around you can find a quieter muffler that will fit. If it is that loud I would say the muffler is shot. And I do not like to hear any engine exauset sound. I HATE it when they put straight pipes on a tractor, sound affule to me but some like that sound.

It depends on the number of years you have been married. Under 5, it's really loud, after 25, what? And then there is 40, 50 and 60. After sixty you wont hear it.

If you cannot tolerate the noise of a 1020 (or for that matter ANY other old tractor) at thirty feet away it might be best for you to avoid any exposure to tractor noise, at all.

NO shame in that, old tractors are NOISY and SMELLY, and not for everyone!

Remember how stupid we were in the 60s and 70s. Over the noise of a loud tractor you could hear a tractor radio a mile away. We were lucky but didn?t know it. Dad wouldn?t spend the money for a radio.

I like my old tractors, but I hate the noise. I wear ear plugs every time I use a old tractor. I have very limited hearing in my left ear from years of looking over my right shoulder while square baling, cutting hay and ploughing that sort of thing. Newer cab tractors are just as quite as a pickup truck.

Does the exhaust exit through the hood, upright vertical muffler, or via an under the rear axle horizontal exhaust? Both were available. I would expect the longer under rear axle exhaust to be quieter. But does tend to heat up the operator platform and foot rests. Helped my brother-in-law bale oat straw one afternoon 40 years ago when temps were 95-97 degrees. Brother-in-law's Dad used his 2020 utility tractor with under the axle exhaust to pull the baler. I loaded the rack, much cooler than stacking bales in the barn. I could barely hear the tractor from the rack.
