Not being familiar with any of the letter series, it occurs to me that the lift looks the same as later tractors. How was the rockshaft powered? Did JD have hydraulics back this far? When did they start? Did JD ever have a mechanically powered rockshaft?

Yes, JD had integral hydraulic rock shaft available from the beginning of the Model A. I got a 34 and it has hydro lift. The unit was pretty much the same until the end of A's.
