Looking at replacing the points and condenser on my Farmall H, are there any tricks to make this job easier? I've lost spark and thought I would start with this and proceed on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The shop manual I have is limited with information.
Thanks in advance.

This spring, I lost spark on my Farmall C. I removed mag cover, 4 screws, and found it was full of water, condensation. It took me two attemps to dry it out..

I haven't had to replace my points and condenser. It looks I would need to take mag apart, remove the coil. The points and condenser look like they are difficult to get to.

When I do take mine apart, I plan to drill a small hole at it's lowest point for condensation to drain out. There is a small hole in distrubutor cap. I'm guessing hole is for condensation.

When I do rebuild my mag, I'll make sure my #1 cylinder is on TDC. Put marks on tractor so rotor is pointing to #1. Put marks on tractor so I can position mag in exact place. That should get me close enough to check timing after tractor starts.

Good luck. Keep us posted after you fix it

Many years ago, my dad's mag on 1940's cub went bad. I used just the points and condenser and hung an external coil. It worked that way for many years.

First off do you have a mag or battery with distributor ignation? Could be a very big difference. And I think there are 2 different distributatos for that tractor.

If you do have a magneto they are not very hard to work on. There is a video on U Tube by a girl who really knows what she is talking about.
Look at that video!
First try and get the number one piston on TDC then remove the mag. once the mag is out you can take it apart and clean it and remove any corrosion. Sand the points or replace them it,s up to you. reassemble the mag and bench test it to see if you now have spark.
I followed along on the U Tube video and got my Farmall M going about a month ago.

Below is a link to the official IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual for magnetos. It won't post here as a clickable link, so you will have to copy it and post in into the address bar of your web browser.

NO s e x y grrl there, just "the cold hard facts" from IH, written "back in the day" when mags were an everyday thing.

you do not need to drill any holes just have new gaskets. No way that cover should be full of water as that means mag body would be full of water even the point area. You must need a new top cover for the coil and gasket. I have 60 pluss yrs with those mags and have never seen one with coil cover area full of water someone must have used hi-pressure water to get that area full of water.

gene,
Your assumption that I used a pressure washer is totally wrong. I never use water to clean tractor and I never leave my tractors or mowers outside. It's always stored inside pole barn.
When I said full of water, I meant the cap was shorted out with water. Two days in a row, I had cap shorted out. Even put silicone on cap to keep moisture out. Last time I coated inside cap with WD40.
I will have a drain hole when I take my mag apart to replace points and condenser.

You've got a hole in the cap and you wonder why you get water in the mag.
I've been told that a 1/8" hole will not drain water.
