I've had this pic sitting in my files for nearly a year, as there was something particular about RNAS Yeovilton and the year 1943, or maybe having to do with the Seafire at that place/time. Unfortunately, be darned if I can remember what the significance was. Hopefully one of our friends across the Big Pond can shed a little light.

In any case, it fits in the "Extra" category due to the tractor. Fordson, I believe?

I do not have information about the Yeovil picture in 1943 but J. J. Wright and Sons
Limited of East Dereham, Norfolk, England was one of the main companies supplying New
Fordson tractors to the government and servicing tractors that were used on the
aerodromes throughout the UK. The company was situated within a few yards of the railway
station and train loads of Model N's were being shipped in for repair and out again after
servicing. Over the period of the war, 1939 to 1945 the company serviced 5000 tractors
from the aerodromes alone as well as servicing Case and Fordson tractors for the farming
industry. They employed up to 2000 staff in machine shops and repair facilities.

I have been involved in writing a very successful book about the history of the company
which has been in the No.1 position in the local best sellers lists for three weeks and
never lower than No.3 for the past eight weeks.

J.J. Wright and Sons Ltd, Ford Main Dealer for 60 Years. F. G. Milk and B. J. K. Dye. ISBN Number 9781527237063.

We have not sold any in the US as we thought there would be limited interest. Sold to New Zealand and Australia though.

My uncle, USAF, was stationed on the east coast of England in (I think) 1943-44. He was a p-51 mechanic. Jim

Well, am probably gonna stick my foot in my mouth again (...up to the knee!), but I think I remember another tidbit about this pic. With it being in my files, I had pre-dated the pic for Sep 1. Seems there was some significance to this pic and the month of September.

OK, that's all I have. Ya'll gotta take it from there.

Majorman, thanks for the info. Sounds like a good read. For the folks over here that would like to get a copy, would it be possible to sell them in the YT ads? Not sure how you'd figure postage though.

Did a search for the ISBN and found a page that shows the book cover and gives a bit of info:

The P51's were based mainly in Suffolk, we had the heavy bombers around us. Within a ten mile radius of my home there are about ten ex USAF bases mostly Liberators. Twenty five miles away are the two main bases today of Mildenhall and Lakenheath. The crews who did not survive are remembered on memorials in the local villages and there is a big memorial in the Forum in Norwich.

The Uncle Survived till his mid 70s. He got into electricity type electronics (vacuum tubes). and drove tanker trucks for Standard Oil. Thanks for the response, he only said a few words about his service. mostly about how tough the engines were to run with parts shot off, or no oil. Jim
