I planted butternut squash, and have a lot I would like to store. Anyone have a good suggestion on how to store this squash. I don't have a cellar. Thanks Stan

Cooler and dry is best. Above freezing though on the cool. You could also just peel them cook them and freeze that way till needed. We freeze a lot like in the neighborhood of probably 20 pounds per year. It makes good pie too. Just like pumpkin only slightly lighter color. The green ones with the neck like a gourd are best for pie the texture of the squash matches best.
If nobody tells you in advance you can't tell.

We have a relatively dry hand dug cellar under part of our old house. I can keep butternut squash up into late January in that cellar. We also have a cellar under an old smokehouse, but it is rather damp. Squash will only keep there into November.

Pick them dry and do not wash with water.
Just use a dry towel.

Squash should be hardened before storage.
Place on screen for good air flow for 10 to 15 days with temperatures in the mid 80's.
This will allow excess water to evaporate and the skin to get hard.

Store in cool (55 deg) dry dark place.

I'll bet that Larry on the corner will be all over this thread. He loves those squashes. Probably even prefers squash to a good TBone.
Myself, I would donate them to the local zoo here. Lots of animals like to eat them and I've heard it's funny to watch the different animals eat them. Elephants just smash them with their foot and pick up the pieces. Monkeys try to chew holes in them. Ungulates don't know what to do with them but will eat them if you cut them in half.

I cook them and freeze in small ziplock bags. Couple minutes in the microwave and it's ready to eat.

I used to cook it, freeze it in containers, and use it in pie filling in place of pumpkin. Everyone who trier it liked it better than traditional pumpkin pie.

I can not joke anymore about Squash,,ever since you saved the little bunny,,,my wife (and boss) said leave that nice man alone,,stop bothering him! I must obey!

We did not freeze, we caned it for the pies. Canning is a lot cheaper than buying a freezer for things just as good caned and you don't have to wory about power going out and loosing everything in freezor, had that in 05, figured about $1,500 worth including both items that should have been canned and things you could not can.

We always stored it by wiping off with a mild bleach and water solution, then put them in bins with ventilated sides so they could get ar, such as milk crates. Put in basement till weather cooled, then moved to garage.
