I Need Help... With A Yanmar...

Alright guys, I need some help... My parents have a F18D Yanmar diesel tractor. It is believed to be a mid 80's model.

The thing has always ran like a top, and makes great power. Today, I fired it up, drove it outside, and it was just sitting there idling, when out of no where it started knocking bad and smoking a grey/white smoke.

I limped it into our work shop, I am assuming this is sign of a failed or hung injector? I'm familiar with diesel systems, and how they work, but this is the first true mechanical diesel I've ever worked on? How do I figure out WHICH injector it is? It is a 3 cylinder, naturally aspirated.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a proper diagnosis? Thanks!!

With it running loosen each injector one at a time. The working ones will effect the running, the bad one won?t make any difference.

Might be an injector stuck open. Remove all injector lines and move them aside. With lines away from the inlet watch each injector inlet while cranking engine. There should be NO compression blowing fuel/air back out the inlet, if there is that injector is stuck open.

Is there any chance that gasoline found its way into the tank by mistake? I saw a Kubota do that once.

Be sure to let us know what the outcome is, we have a JD 4600 with a Yanmar engine. So far, it's been flawless, 1160 hours, but I'm very careful about my fuel, use some 2-stroke oil and occasionally some biocide.
