Saw a big generator today

I?m starting trade school in a week and my mentor friend took me to Mount Allison University in Sackville New Brunswick today. His brother is an industrial electrical contractor in River View NB and while he was over there working with him over the years one of the places they often did installations was the University. The last year he was still there which was about 3 years ago they installed a new backup generator. It?s a V12 Cat diesel with an 800 KW generator. Takes up a whole room. What an impressive unit.

Had one similar to that at the last chicken hatchery that I managed, only a Cummins V-12 and a Onan 750 KW generator. It was outside in it's own enclosure.

Barnes Hospital in St. Louis had seven of those on the thirteenth floor of East Pavilion. They would all fire up once a week for exercise and during power outage they were fully automatic. If there was a failure in one and/or another, the load would shed according to reverse life safety.

I will tell you what I was told when I started in 1968.
Keep your mouth shut and learn.
Ask questions.
The only dumb one. Is the one you didn't ask.
Generators and voltage will kill you. If given the chance.
Don't take shortcuts.
Don't be afraid to speak up. If you think something is wrong.
Don't listen to experts. The grave yards are full of them

Going to Holland College in Summerside PEI ,taking 1 yr electrical,I finish up at the potato farm this week, had a great spring and summer there.

Hooked up a gen set to the load bank today for testing. The rating is 3000kw and 4000kw peak, will find out tomorrow what it will produce.

That?s big. Largest one I saw was on the ship at Maine Maritime . They had two. No dea what size they were. Main engine was 17K horsepower.

At work we have 5 CAT gensets I think they are V16s each engine burns 100 gallons/hr They are capable of keeping our electric melting furnaces going to they are emptied or to supply power to the rolling mill building. We produce Copper,Brass and Nickel coil material as well as supply 65% of the US Mints coin material

For many years our local ski hill used a 2,000 kw genset to power snowmaking compressors and pumps. Prime mover was a huge Cummins V16.

The genset radiator was the size of a garage door - on cold nights the large volume of warm air it blew out of the generator enclosure was most delightful!

We've got two just about as pictured, Cat V12 and 2250kW gen sets. We made trouble for ourselves by demanding that they both get a start signal, then the lag set synchs to the lead set, the electronics seemed full of gremlins. The motors aren't all that loud, especially inside the enclosure. Yes, I still wear hearing protection, anyways.

These two are backups to the backup source, which backs up the four big generators- 3500kW GE sets powered by Worthington V12s. They go from dead stop to full speed (514rpm) and load in ten seconds or less, with air start systems.

One of the casinos here has two of them setting about eight feet apart. There outside. It was a cold day and I had a side door open on each one and was amazed how they kept them half way warm. About that time they both started the same time. I was like a squirrel in the middle of a busy city street.

Down at work they have a pretty "different" gen set. Has a JET engine on it. Have only heard it run one time and the sound is rather unique.

When I was in Afghanistan, BAF was totally powered by 12 huge generators, they consumed about 1.2 million gallons of fuel per month according the the Chief Warrant officer in charge of them.
