Corn Borer Tractor

I thought I sent a note that I was restoring my Dads 1927 15-30 Deering McCormick tractor. This tractor is not original because it has the Robin carburetor, intake and exhaust system. It s also on rubber. When my dad purchased this tractor back around 1959 the tractor had diamond tread turf tires both front and back. On the hood stenciled are the following words. US Dept Of Agriculture, Bureau Of Entomology, Corn Borer Control. I have read in this form that the government purchased 444 of these tractors to pull a corn shredder to control the European Corn Borer in the late 30 s or so. Just wondering if this tractor is considered rare and if anyone s else knows of someone who does ???

I can't speak to the rareness of your tractor. But like a build card gives you the date of mfgr and initial point of shipment sale, you know some history of your tractor. A tractor is just a tractor, if we know that Uncle Jim bought it after he sold his team, and farmed with it for 20 years, it makes Uncle Jim's tractor just a little bit unique. So find out all you can about the corn borer fight with the USDA and write it up and be ready to share with others. BTW don't paint over the stenciling on the tractor. You may very well find someone who has a connection to that USDA operation that would value your tractor sentimentally. It could happen. gobble

I would agree with Tom. Do as much homework as you can and document everything. I would also try and preserve that stenciling. If you must paint it be sure and take plenty of pictures first and then reproduce it if you can.

I'm familiar with the JD corn borer tractors, but never knew McCormick Deering had some. I would assume it was rare, but would have no idea of value.

Hello again from the Corn Borer. I saw a post in this forum that was from a person who saw an article in the Successful farming magazine that featured his restored D John Deer tractor that was purchased by the government for corn borer control. In that article it mentioned that the government purchased 444 D John Deere tractors and 444 15-30 Deering McCormicks to control the corn borers that I mentioned. It stated that the tractor had to have a power take off shaft built into the rear housing because the corn shredder was driven by a power take off shaft. I have a question to anyone who has restored these tractors. How much pitting is acceptable in the sleeves that are used?? I have sleeves with some very minor pitting. They have been professionally honed but did not remove all the minor pitting. I'm sending photos of the hood with the some of the wording that I could make out. I will try to get a better pic of the whole wording
