Mecum auction rule ..... a question .... ???

I was browsing this weekend's Mecum auction results from Monterrey, CA. One of the cars on the block was being sold under the condition ..... MUST BE SOLD OUT OF STATE OR TO A LICENSED AGENT.

Anyone know what the reason for this might be? And what exactly is a licensed agent?

Been to car auctions were the pollution control devices were broken, disabled and or missing that they would only sell to a licensed dealer. Was told EPA rules. The buying dealers either has to repair the emissions stuff prior to selling or scrap the vehicle out.

I'd bet that the vehicle in question didn't pass the emissions test in CA. Same thing. Licensed dealer would have to bring it up to snuff before reselling or it has to stay out of CA.

I should have mentioned, a '78 Toyota Landcruiser 6 cylinder gas ..... are those California plates on the vehicle? That one didn't sell at $24,000 USD, looks nice. I've seen a lot of those sell at auction for double that or even more over the past few years. It must have had some warts, shiny and bright doesn't always mean what it appears to be I guess.

CH, some of the recent FJ40s are coming up from South America, where they were sold with little or no emissions control devices or many with diesel engines.

Had I known then what I know now, I would have kept my 72 FJ-40 with factory soft top/doors, my first vehicle...

If that is the rule in California, wouldn't the seller be better served to ship it to a state that was not so particular?

In California it is the sellers responsibility to make it pass smog.
I would imagine for whatever each reason the stipulation of not for sale to a Californian could allow it to be sold.

We are in Monterey California for the big concourse event and Mecum autions

Big money and lots of it.

People with big deep pockets and money to burn.

The advantages of this must be considered.

Hence perhaps collectors have shipped their cars to California to sell at this event.

There are workarounds to owning a car that will not pass cal smog in cal like out of state plates/ psuedo ownerships etc.

The subject of the OP appears to be sporting plates from Venezuela.
Allowed to be import by the feds due to it's age.
Does not mean it can be driven in every state.

No sale at @4k likely means it had a reserve on it.

I've been to auctions in Maryland where they said only dealers or out of state resident can buy because I was told for a MD resident to buy the car it had to have been inspected
in MD.
