Spraying Weeds

This was my first year baling my own hay and it went fairly well. However, I would like to clean up the field and try to get rid of some of the weeds. The field is mainly fescue, red clover, and Korean lespedeza with
other grasses mixed in. My question is, what should I spray on it? I would also want to spray the pasture but I don?t have a way to get the cattle off of it. Is there something that might work for both? Thanks in
advance!

With the mix of grasses, clover and lespedeza, There really is not going to a chemical you can spray that will just kill the weeds. You have grass species and broad leaf species. Most herbicides kill one or the other. The same thing is true for your pasture.

So we would need to know what the weeds you wanting to kill are. Then we can recommend a weed killer that will kill the weeds but it very well could kill some of the good plants too. It is a balancing act. You need to decide if the weeds being gone is better then the loss of some of the beneficial plants.

Truthfully if the hay stand is very good, the best things to do to get better hay is good fertility and timely cuttings. If the weeds do not get to go to seed then your hay will slowly gain on the weeds with better fertility. If you have spots that are all weeds with not hay, then you may just spot spray the weeds and then interseed those spots the next spring.

And that folks is a true story, lol. I am fighting the same battle with my neighbors run down farm. JD Seller has it right.

Weeds I am fighting are Iron weeds, hemp dogbane, and "we call it carpet weed", it goes to seed in 3 weeks, has very tiny seeds that will fall off as soon as the equipment shakes it, making it darn near impossible to control. It spreads faster than any other weed I have come across.

If the weeds are taller than the good folige why not get a wick wiper and put on loader or 3 point ,wipe them undesireables with whatever chemicals needed to kill them?

Great suggestion, and works well with ragweed, thistles, and my personal enemy, the yellow rocket.

2-4-D works well on many weeds but will ding clover, may not kill it but will stun it, not sure what it will do to lespedeza.
For woody stuff like briers I use Crossbow.

I like 24D (Trimec), but it is a bad time to spray broadleaf, do it late fall and early summer/spring.

The weeds tend to go dormant and 24D carries very well in the higher temperatures.

Thanks for all the info! I have been wondering if it is best just to try and mow it before the weeds go to seed, I just want to help it along. There was one that I had heard of 2,4db. it is supposedly safe for clover but I was also told that it was not safe to bale for almost two months after spraying it and I was thinking of doing it in the spring. Would putting lime on the field help? I know its supposed to help the grass and wondered if it would help push out the weeds?

Get your soil tested so that you know exactly what it needs. Chances are it needs lime. If you get your fertility up good and have some luck with getting some rain, in 3-4 years you will have to plant weeds in order to have any.
