Tractor you dream of owning or a big farms beater tractor?

Anybody ever spot one of your dream tractors while cruising down the road only to see it being used as the farms beater tractor. Only being deemed fit to run a manure spreader or other jobs that are detrimental to a tractors longevity. Earlier this week while cruising the rural backroads of the area I live in I spotted a tractor that's near the top of my list of dream tractors, that tractor was an Allis Chalmers 8010 FWA. You could definitely tell it was the farm beater, being almost all of there tractors were newer Fendt and JCB tractors on the farm. The tractor was surprisingly solid though, although the air conditioning didn't work which you could tell being that the doors had been pulled off. Anybody have a similar experience, I'm thinking of stopping next time I go by and asking if they would sell it.

Yeah, most JD 8440 and 8640 tractors in Western New York as tank spreader tractors. Some of them looked pretty good yet when I saw them. Dairies would run them a couple seasons until they needed a lot of work or tires then dump them after finding a replacement. By the way I think that AC finally got its act together when they came out with the 8000 series but it was too late. As every AC dealer around here said they should have been out several years earlier when the ag economy was much stronger.

I have owed tractors like you described, ya they can
still do the job, but ..... they will all come with a boat
load of problems. Most of the folks that bought a
large tractor, had a large amount of work for it to,
and you will find that most of these tractors are
beat. And once over 20 years old, getting parts can
get to be a challenge. You can easy spend more
into repairs on a power shift transmission than the
tractor is worth, just as an example. As I said, I have
had them, and don?t dream about having anymore.

Bruce, I posted about chopping corn last year and the transmission went out of this 7810 this summer. The repair estimate is around $15000 . They asked what the trade in value is and dealer told them $7500. For now an old JD 4620 is picking up the slack.

Was that a dealer estimate or an indepmdant shop?

I?d check with an independent place fora. Better price?

Paul

Oh yes, I've always had soft spot for an Oliver 1655 diesel. Seems around here they're all relagated to TMR wagons and not for sale.

I wouldn't mind having a Ford 3600 gas tractor with cab/heat/AC. Or for that matter
any Gas tractor with cab/heat/AC and weighs around 3500# or less.

I?d take an old one any day over one of these new tinfoil and plastic ones follow Keith moldens thread about how great these new Kubotas are . Meanwhile the 3020 keeps on spraying mowing raking plowing discing and drilling paid less for it than one half a Payment on a new one . Worked at the cnh global dealer had several brand new tractors from the factory that wouldn?t even run long enough to get off the semi truck from the factory . All this new junk has Horror stories John Deere Agco any of em . Give me one I can fix any day

And how many hours and What maintenance? 15,000 won?t make a payment on a new one and will the new one last 22 years ?

I had a Ford 8000 for about 5 years like you described liked it in certain ways but that shifter set up wasn't for me,a guy came by and made me an offer it went up the road.

The tractor I always wanted was a JD 4020 which I got in 1999 a 1969 4020 side console with rips/ canopy, never owned a cab tractor but would like a 4230 but would have to check with our resident JD experts if this was a model to stay away from. My wish list.

SV, The 7810 has over 20,000 hours I was told. They are just small dairy farmers not getting any younger. I am sure one last retirement age and his brother is close to retirement age. They haven?t won the lottery so they have no choice but to keep going.

My dream tractor would be a JD 4050 with power shift. I'd be happy with a 4040 as well. Something to keep me warm in the winter while feeding cattle and cool in the summer doing whatever needs done.

I have driven a few. I didn't know the later models had the stick shift. You mean like a 5000 utility 8 spd? I have one of those.

Big dairy down the road used to have a MF 1135 on the lagoon pump. Would like to have had it just to help complete my set of Massey?s. Lol.
I assume it stank...bad
Don?t know where it went

For me it would have to be the 860, the one with the live PTO instead of the tranny driven one. Same tractor otherwise.

I agree too many good solid older tractors around these days for a fraction of what a new one cost for me to buy a new one.Plus the newer ones cost a fortune to repair.
$500 for an injector? That's crazy, last one I bought for my 1550 Oliver was less than $100.

The neighbor has a 1655 married to the grinder mixer on his hog farm. I completely understand. The trade in is nill and the replacement market isn?t equivalent to what he?s got. The 1655 gasser has wore out 2 grinder mixers in the 15 years I?ve been his neighbor. That?s all it does. Every week. All year long. He says he wishes he had the tractor that his dad demoed before he bought the 1655. It was a MM G-750.

One of my friends picked up a old Allis, 7040, or 7060 I think. Anyway the transmission went after they had it only a year. He got real lucky as he found a guy that had the same basic tractor with a spun crank bearing. Bought the tractor, split them both and matched the good transmission to the good engine. Sent the donor tractor to the wrecking yard, and sold the working tractor, and bought new

My dream tractor is a 1206 International wide front end.
I just think its one of the purtiest tractors there is.
Unfortunately, since they are now pretty much relegated to collector status, they have moved far beyond my reach.

I did miss a chance on a 4230 4WD that jumped out of third gear for 5K. It was a nice looking tractor and I dallied too long. It sold in 2 days.

The rig I run for my buddy is a JD 8400 MFWD. Not really a beater tractor for him, but I'm sure it's too old for the BTOs

I agree unless you?re a bto and need to work 1500 acres in a week so you can get started on your other 1500. A John Deere pencil injector is 60$ brand new from stanadyne and you don?t need degree in computer engineering to diagnose it .

James, My first post I ever had on Yesterday?s Tractor was my neighbors 4230 spreading manure. The 4230 was on the round baler and chopper the other day. Good running tractor and very dependable.

I found out about my Oliver 1550 diesel sitting in the woods down in NC,really wanted it,made a deal with the owner.Hauled it home got it running with not much trouble or expense.
Couple more I was at auctions and decided when I saw them I wanted it Oliver 1600 Utility,Long/Landini R9500 they both went right much cheaper than I was going to go if I had to.
My Oliver 1365 4WD I decided I really wanted, probably paid more than I should have considering I was going to have to redo the motor but all things considered I have a real nice, good looking and good
running 55HP 4WD tractor for under $6,000 that I use a lot around the farm.

Unless you have a JD5105 for some odd reason the injectors for it are $100.00 ? Look like the cheaper ones to me , but they are to be different.

My dream tractor is an Essex Tri-Directional but are they ever hard to get a hold of. Every time I get a line on one, by the time I get there it's gone! Only thing I can do is keep on trying. (;>))

3545 Massey is my dream tractor, almost had one just a bid away but was well over what I planned to stop at, sure wish I had bid one more time!

Brown Swiss, I think that the 3545 was the model that I was close to buying one of around 15 years ago but didn't. I heard later that they were known for electronics problems.
