Update on missing draw bar pin

So Sunday I posted this picture

The pin that holds the draw bar onto my 930 Case went missing, let the draw bar slide back, the pto shaft beat its self up, and I got brown off with the whole deal. Today I filed the kinks out of the pto shaft splines, and rescued the spreader from the field, but search as I may, couldn?t find that pin that gave me all the trouble. I crawled under my 1030 Case to remove its draw bar pin, and found it was broken in two.Called my local dealer, they are Kubota now but used to be CaseIH, and they told me that they thought they could get the new pins and keepers I needed. I was shocked to see this pin drop out in two pieces.

A good machine shop could make that using hardened steel. A lesson for all of us to maybe check the drawbar pin on our older tractors. Just think of the consequences if someone was pulling 30 tons of grain at road speed on a busy highway.

It might not hurt to have a heavy safety chain on the spreader,as bad as it was it might be way worse another time, that?s a big spreader

(quoted from post at 16:55:51 08/13/19) I say again that I find it very annoying that that pin is smaller than the one hitched to the implement. Why do they do that?
And has a big hole in the middle.

Bob the pin that Bruce pictured was made by someone. They never had a hole in them like in the picture, and they are 1" pin supported rite above and below the drawbar. The drawbar slides into a yoke with maybe an 1/8" clearance, bolted to the bottom of the transmission housing. Also the tab on the pin should have a hole in it large enough for a bushing over the bolt that holds it in, so the pin can float and not break the tab off. My later 1969 931 also has a 3/4" bolt with bushing holding my pin in. The 3/8" bolt for the tab was a bit small and Case changed it.-------Loren

Bruce, here is a picture of what you can do to improve the pin. Case did this on late 30 series and 70 series. Rather than relying on a small tab and a 3/8" bolt and bushing, they welded a heavier tab and utilized one of the 3/4" bolts that hold the whole 3pt and drawbar bracket to the transmission housing. Don't forget to install a bushing on the bolt so the pin and tab assy can float.------Loren

Well Bruce It might have been a "Lucky Day" after all. That broken pin in the other tractor could have allowed some thing to have been damaged worse than the spreader.

Ford had the worst setup. My 6000 had a clip on the top of the pin that held it from falling out the bottom. Any kind of weeds or corn stalks and you would lose the pin. I lost one drawbar while plowing and had another slid out but I caught it before I lost it. I drilled and taped two holes on the bottom side and made a plate to hold the pin in.

I like the later pin design that Loren shows. I have made these pins by just cutting off a heat treated hitch pin and welding a strap to the piece. You can find one inch hitch pins on sale for under $8 here.

I bought a new tractor in 1987 and not long after lost the draw pin. Found it a couple months ago when digging a trench.

Bruce after looking at Loren's picture, I think just cutting a good heat treated hitch pin the correct length and then making a flat strap with two holes that would go out to the larger bolts would be better than new. It looks like it can not get out the top so let the pin float above the strap. All you would need to do is drill two holes in a flat piece of flat steel for the bottom holder.

I have had the pins pop out of my 4020 and 4230 while spreading fertilizer. The little tab must of been just right when it bounced. I wedged a peice of steel in there to stop that

agreed on the 6000 Ford Setup ,,. Btw ,. JD Seller ,You are not the only one that lost a drawbar ,,. lucky for us we were pulling a wheat drill in corn stalks. Never had trojuble with the 4020 loosing its drawbar , But could agree it is possible withtrailer type equipment .The hasp on the 430 Case is about as good as anything going . BUT ,,.I need TO MAKE a couple around here ....if anyone has any they could ship me , just email me .

On the implement end the pin isn?t supposed to be tight to the drawbar hole, most implements need clearance/slop for going over and into dips so they don?t damage their pole/tongue/hitch.

When cutting a heat treated pin or a grade 8 bolt with a hacksaw take frequent breaks and do not get the blade hot it then loses its temper and then work hardens the area you are trying to cut. I prefer a cut off disc.

Looks like a VAC pin. Yes often i wonder how a little pin can pull more than the bigger pins. A,B,G and all number series 2 cylinders john deere have a same size pin even my 4010.but i never lost or broke 1... Yet

I lost the round baler off the 7800 Deere one year. Not sure what came first but the bottom support bolts snapped and then the drawbar came loose. I had it drilled out at the dealer and he said you would be surprised how many come through like that.

I slide the drawbar on the 886 International every so often and am amazed that there?s only that little piece of stock in a slit that holds it on. Seems like it would be a weak link but I?ve never had a problem with it.
