Self driving semi delivers 50,000 buds

Self driving semi drives 120 miles and delivers over 50,000 Budweiser.

The technology exists to replace truck drivers. Here is an article that says Robots could replace 1.7 million American truckers in the next decade. I'm sure hackers will want to hack trucks hauling Budweiser.

Artificial intelligence is here and there are many different articles as to what jobs may be affected in the next years. Here is just one article. Want to read more google AI and jobs.

I know I'll never have a self driving car. However we need to get used to it, self driving vehicles will be common place in the future. I'm sure self driving vehicles will be in accidents and computer programs will be upgraded prevent accidents in the future. Hope they do a better job programming vehicles than the 737 MAX 8.

What kind of sicko would do something like that and intecinately endanger others on the highway?

Geo,

What if I go the other direction. I may have one of the few vehicles on the road that I am in control of. I stab the brakes for an unwanted deer, the auto-cars stop, I rather keep on my merry way. Carburetors are not extinct. I do not need a continuous map guidance either, she can take a nap!

My problem with that is: Anything mechanical or electrical will break over time no matter how good it's made. I have been in the repair business too long to know any different. Stan

Yes hackers will cause problem then terrorist will get the hackers info and use them to kill mass numbers of people. And or the AI system will get tired of working for man kind and do away with us. Plus all those jobs lost will cause many other problems which we do not need

There is a lot of people that hate the concept of driverless Vehicles. Since there isn't a drivers life involved there is bound to be someone crazy enough to do it.

There's never an answer to a What If question because there's always a follow up question that starts out with, What If?

Smarter people who build AI vehicles will better address all What If questions.

And there are many people working on self driving vehicles.

I have no doubt at all that they will work well and have a much safer record than the human drivers who hate driving OTR anyway. They will have their limitations so there will still be many jobs for human drivers.

Horse and carriage, lamp oil, typewriters, VCR's, aluminum siding, times change.

I have a least 20 Coleman gas lamps.

Designing for mass production is a hoot. I well remember the FMEA committee meetings I participated in at John Deere forty years ago. Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.

For example what happens if:
1. this particular fastener fails or falls out?
2. if this warning lamp burns out, what could happen next?

The answers/suggestions got pretty fanciful and impractical solutions indicated....depending on the possibilities...but at least the design team were considering what could happen. Of course there had to be a bit of a time limit on rejigging the designs or that would go on forever.

nothing new at all, CAT had self driving 200 ton haul trucks running at a test sight in AZ as early as 1993, in 1996 a local mine decided to try two of them, the next day before they were to be taken apart and shipped here they hit head on,, needless to say the mine never bought them then or any since the tech is not 100% sound, that said there are way to many on the roads today who have no business driving at all, but to me self driving cars are still light years from being the norm

Self driving cars have already killed at LEAST 2 people, you'll never see me in one.
And who in their right mind would hijack a truck load of Budweiser????
There's at least 5,000 beers that are way better to drink than Bud...

(quoted from post at 15:31:44 08/12/19) Who is going to install tire chains at the mountain passes in winter?

A self driving truck would have the smarts to not go up into the mountains in the snow.

My son-in-law and daughter test rode a Tesla. The salesman summoned it to the front door of the dealership. They got in and programmed where they wanted to go. Nashville Tn. Area. Car left dealership went thru numerous stop lights. Merged onto interstate. Cruse set on 75 or so. Passed several cars and trucks. Screen showed 5 cars to front and 3 to rear. All cars on both sides. Eventually went back to dealer. Took them to front door. Then parked itself. Gets 110 miles to gallon same as if electricity is.07. 0 to 60 time is 3 seconds. Range is 380 miles. If you pay for that range. Car was 38000 base but with extras was 68000. They are here!

John ..... two people, like TWO people (2 people) .... man, that's an epidemic. Meanwhile thousands killed with drivers behind the wheel. You'll never catch me in a car with a driver behind the wheel !!!

Yes, claiming 500 mile range. Only downside is weights 10000 lb. More than a diesel. Supposed to come in 2020 ? There is another Co. That is coming with a electric pickup, along with Ford.

There's even railroad terrorists. Tried to kill me and my crew with spikes, chucks of rail and ties across tracks. Long story shortened. Both locomotives had punctured fuel tanks. 2nd had $200,000 in fire damage and the guys in white coveralls went crazy trying to contain 6000 gal diesel fuel that was running in to creek.

Driverless cars or trucks may be OK once the bugs are worked out of the software and the current issues are dealt with. BUT, and this is a BIG BUT, these things are going to wear out. They will need maintenance. They will need constant monitoring as to mechanical condition. Then there are those pesky intermittent problems that drive mechanics crazy. When these things start wearing out and getting less and less reliable, the danger factor will increase exponentially.

Given the choice, I would prefer not to share the road with them. Better still, I would prefer to not have them on the roads at all.

Maybe they can program them to stay out of the left lane holding up traffic for miles at a time!

yes never said they were not around said to me they are light years from being the norm, the normal thing on the road,, maybe in city's they will be the ticket,, but I do not feel they have the tech all sorted out yet, things like road construction, flooding, snow and ice and a road that gives way ect will all be things the auto drive cannot deal with at least not with out some major hiccups, no matter how much you pay,, heck they send spacecraft to other planets one would think they could do the same here easy,, but there are a lot of human caused extra factors here thrown in the mix,, like the movie Total Recall with Arnold in it and the self driving taxi. sure its coming but it will not be without its own set of troubles, I would not mind a automated flying car for trips,, the ground is mine to drive lol

Well, heck, if they can figure out how to deliver CBD to you without a driver, you'll be go to go, George!

For you doubters? The self driving vehicle is coming. Make no mistake about that. Driving down the interstate 120 miles is a publicity stunt. Nothing more nothing less. But that is going to be the future. Not today or tomorrow. But it's coming. At first they will make the companies have a driver on board to take over if it malfunctions. It's cost effective for the companies to chase this stuff. Only time the truck will have to actually stop is to load and unload, take on fuel and maintenance. No having the truck sitting idle while a driver sleeps. Trucks don't make money unless they are moving with a load on.

Now there will be a few issues. There always is with something new. First time a driverless truck is involved in a serious injury accident or it kills someone they will pull em off the road till they figure out why. Then of course there will be litigation. But eventually they will get it. The question is as more and more jobs are replaced with machines what are people going to do for money?

Seems like most people think everything is going to remain the same here in the USA which of course rarely do things remain the same. One rouge country could blow a bunch of satellites out of orbit the GPS deal would be over for quite awhile,One EMP bomb over the USA and we're back to riding/working horses and using diesel tractors that can run with no
electrical systems as long as we can find a little fuel.Modern technology is a very fragile thing as I see it, that takes a tremendous amount of effort and money, big money to
keep going. My bet is something throws a wrench in the gears at some point and it will be a lot more complicated than a wrench.

An EMP can already shut down everything with electronics, which would render ALL of us totally helpless and vulnerable. Evil forces at their finest.

2015 - Hackers crash Jeep on the highway
2019 - Self driving Truck delivers Budweiser
20?? - Hackers hack Self driving truck, runs it through a crowd of people killing hundreds
Next day - People complain abut self driving trucks

I know self-driving cars and trucks are coming. I don't doubt it a bit.
I'm just curious how many people start to hijack these vehicles. I mean, all it would take would be for a vehicle in front to slow way down and stop and then another vehicle pulls up from behind and box the truck in. If it's full of Budweiser, there will be all kinds of nuts in the world trying to take the cargo.

No more helpless than people were back in the early 1800's and they survived and prospered. It'd be tough but people would have to make up their minds get in a survival mindset or just give up and die.One thing the over weight problem would be solved in pretty short order.

Case Nutty, Boeing just successfully tested their autonomous flying car/taxi. Sounds like you may not have to wait that long.

What? Why on earth would anyone want to take Budweiser? Not at least when there are real beers out there.

Really? They hijack trucks now. The driver winds up in the hospital or morgue. On a self driver it could be set up to shut down in the event of a hijacking.

This is an exciting time in our history and I hope that the self-driving cars, trucks, and drones develop quickly. I see an Amazon drone flew 50 miles and made a delivery without any human interaction.

I want this to catch on as fast as possible because I love change. Of course there will be breakdowns, wrecks, and ruined loads. Drivers don't have a perfect records, either. In fact we would have to try to make a computer malfuncion as much as people do.

My only lament is that I am not 30 years younger so I could be involved in this ground-breaking stage of development.

The world is full of sickos. They don't care for anyone but themselves.

My cousin is an airline pilot. Those big plains already fly by computer, for the most part. The crew
enters the data, and the 'puter flies like it's told! They can even takeoff and land automatically! Crew
is pretty much there to monitor things, and take over in an emergency!
