Do any of you know if the Navy Clam Lake is still there?

Clam Lake is still there. The Navy pulled out around 2004. Pulled up all their antennas. At least they say they did.

Believe it was. I'm told they went to higher freqs now. When they first installed it up there the locals were worried that they would be first on the Russians bomb list. The reason the Navy said they wanted it there was location. plus solid rock several miles thick underneath so earthquakes would not be a problem.

I thought the solid rock would conduct the low frequency sound better to the nuclear submarines. We thought Madison was top target because they had NORAD at Truax and I helped build a fallout shelter in friends basement in 1959. North American Air Defense Command was moved underground in Colorado.

I don't think the Russians would ever bomb Moscow-Madison. Too many communists there.

I went to a communist party meeting at the UW about 1961 while I was a student taking Air Force Rotc .Didn't agree with eased us into the them but thought they had right to express their views. I think the McCarthy era red scare eased us into the Vietnam war because all the diplomats with experience in SE Asia and China were forced out.
