Drilled Corn.

I have seen 4 or 5 fields of corn in 7" rows in my own and surrounding counties. In all cases they side dressed it with something or other, there are evenly spaced green streaks throughout the fields. What is the purpose of this operation? Thanks, Fritz

Purpose ? To grow corn. Where are these fields located and any idea of when the were planted ?
Might be an attempt to make up for late planting.

One college summer I worked for a seed corn company. We tried a lot of stuff, including aerial seeding corn, no planter or rows. Had to run over crop to spray and fertilize, and harvest was a royal pain. Yield didn't see enough of advantage to continue, as I remember.

Are you sure it's corn? Sudangrass looks just like corn in the early growth.

You could plant corn on preventive planted acres and receive payments IF the population was over 50,000 and the rows narrower than 20 inches. So they may have drilled corn and then side dressed it with anhydrous before it came up. They will then chop it some time this fall. It would more than likely not have ears but would be tall grass.

Also when it is young sudan grass is hard to tell from corn. So it could be that too.

50,000 plants would have a tremendous seed cost. Would planting feed corn an option?

Sounds like Sorgham-sudan to me....looks very similar to corn at early growth stage.

If you were planting it for cover and feed you could buy cheap seed corn not the $350 a bag kind.

That's what I was wondering, if they were gonna chop it. It presently looks too sickly to bear anything.

I agree with the ones saying it?s sorgum Sudan grass, or some such version.

Looks exactly like sickly corn but grows very fast and is actually quite healthy, just finer stemmed than corn. Makes good silage in a short time. This year with all the weather issues, lot of livestock guys don?t have much choice but to try this. Was encouraged by some govt program changes for this year as well on prevent plant insurance acres.

I heard about it when I was a kid but didn't see it until a few years ago when our neighboring dairy farmer started growing it. I first thought they had broadcast corn but then found out what it really was. They like it for silage, got three cuttings last year and don't grow corn at all anymore.
