800 ford thermostat housing

Hi,
Anyone have any tips on the correct way to install a new thermostat housing on a ford 800?
I installed a new radiator and decided to change the thermostat since if it went bad I would have to tear my loader back off the tractor. I installed the new thermostat and broke the thermostat housing. Luckily I have a parts tractor and installed that one and it leaked so I tightened it up a bit more and it also cracked. I ordered a new one from Yesterday?s Tractor but I don?t want to mess up that one too. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a better/ thicker gasket?

Try putting stat in hsg then thin layer of silicone with gskt and let set over nite . This will hold stat in hsg. Usually stat falls down is what breaks hsgs.

There is a groove machined into the housing or the head the thermostat sits in.

Sometimes on the difficult ones, it is necessary to glue the thermostat into the groove with a small amount of silicone. Let it set so the tstat doesn't fall down while the housing and gasket are being installed.

nek58, I broke one once too. What you have to do is get in place WITHOUT tightening the screws. Use them to hold it only, not to draw it in. You may have some cleaning of the groove to do in order to get it to seat.

It's pretty tricky to install correctly. When I replaced my thermostat, I ran a fine wire under the thermostat so I could lift it up into the groove while tightening the bolts. Then I pulled the wire out and finished tightening.
