A buddy sent me this--He knows nothing about it--It must have been tough farming years ago!

Loaded for bear-

Run out of seed, send dog home to let someone know you need to be refilled.

Might as well try and shoot something for dinner while you are waiting.

I was on my Case 830 disking. Noticed my new neighbor was doing the same on his side of the fence line. When he stopped for a quick sandwich I swung over to the fence line to introduce myself.

He was packing a 32 lever action Winchester special on his John Deere 830...?.I was packing a 30-30 Winchester. We both were wondering about each other. After being nice and courteous to each other once of us asked "what's with packing?"

I commented there's a German Sheppard Dog with a heavy brown leather collar in he area. I have no information on the dog however the dog was in our yard, tried to kill our cat and another neighbor seen the same dog with a chicken in his mouth.

My new neighbor on his side of the fence stated "dogs dead"

I see more wildlife while out on a tractor now than I ever have. Turkey?s, rabbits, deer, coyotes, foxes, even black bears. Haven?t started carrying a gun with me all the time, but it has crossed my mind. Had a black bear cross the road in front of me this past weekend,. Few years ago, we never saw these darn things.

Back in the no cab days, 60s & 70s & 80s we had a 22 rifle on all of our tractors. Mostly for rodents. Never thought much about it. Just another tool. Now with poorer vision I carry a 12 GA stagecoach shotgun. Once again mostly for rodents.

NOTE;
I said poorer vision, not blind. I know my target before I shoot.

Does this help? Looks like bolt action. Many years ago I nailed several ground hogs while plowing. They just plain ignored you. POW!

Ran it through the photo program and sharpened the image.

Dad always talked about the time he was spring plowing clover plowdown field, dog was running along and chased up a badger in front of the tractor, dad stopped.

Badger looked around and headed for higher ground away from the dog.

Up on the tractor, around dads feet.

I guess that was kind of an exciting day.

Our old neighbor said that he and his brother had one tractor on their adjoining farms during WWII. Brother ran it in the daytime on his farm and neighbor ran it at night on his own place. Parts were hard to get due to the war effort. He had a shotgun slid over the battery and under the gas tank when he nosed both front wheels off in a ditch. The gun slid forward, flipped the hammer and shot the voltage regulator/cutout right off of the tractor. You could say that it was a dark period in his life.

i would think that big hairy dog would block all the air flow thru the radiator.

also wouldn't be too comfortable to carry a rifle like that while driving. presume he has a holster on the old WC.

Not sure, but might be related to the Hatfields.

I think SMS has the right idea. Tractor was made just before WWII, and there was a lot of uproar and panic when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Just an ordinary member of the association ...... you know, the association !!! They take them to church as well, just another day on the farm.

As tame as the coyotes are getting in my area I should start carrying heat in the tractor cab. This spring working in the field a coyote sat there and watched me go by a couple times.

My Dad told me that Grandpa carried his 12 gauge double barrel shot gun on his 15-30 during the fall so he could shoot pheasants. It worked really well until one time it fell off the tractor and he ran over it with the disk. The gun still bares the gouges and the patch to the stock.

Dad said they carried a gun all of the time when he bought the home place, that would have been around 1958. Coyotes and foxes seemed to have bounties on them, paid by the county. Just turn in the ears.

If you had ever had your beautiful German Shepard killed in the field by a pack of 4 coyotes you wouldn't wonder.

I had an uncle way back that was riding on a hay rack with a shotgun and it went off for some reason. About blew his arm off. It was crippled up form the blast.
