Need Help With a Wagon Hoist

Good folks here at YT , I have found myself in a pickle.
I am building a dump wagon using a Midwest WH 5 bolster hoist.
Today I started working up the hoist to get it ready to paint
and discovered the cylinder is most likely beyond salvage, even
the end plate the rod passes through is missing and the rod is pitted.
There were many Midwest hoists under barge boxes once upon a time so maybe just
maybe a cylinder is laying in a shed or on a shelf that I could purchase.
Finding such a animal might be next to impossible but nothing ventured nothing
gained. I thank you folks for taking the time to read my post.

It would help if we knew where you are located, as shipping could get expensive. I think I have one here in central Iowa.

Thank you very much for your reply. I am located in SW Wisconsin
less than one hour from Dubuque. I have family members that
travel Iowa a good bit for work so perhaps something good could work out.
The cylinder in question has just a bolt connecting it to the hoist frame
then the rod that is necked down fits into a yoke type receiver and is held
in place with a cotter key. Just a single acting 5" cylinder.
Thanks again for your answer to my post.
Larry

If it's used single acting the pitted rod on yours won't hurt a thing, that side is dry basically

Thank you for the encouragement/advice. The barrel of the cylinder is also
extremely rusty and has no end cap/cover, that has led me to the
idea of finding a replacement. I don't know how hard it would be to
find the end cover but anything is worth a try. Thanks again.

Do you know if your bad hoist is for a 10 foot or a 12 foot box? There should be a ton of them laying around or underneath old boxes rotting away in groves. I wouldnt worry about replacing just the cylinder when complete hoists can be found so easily. Maybe JD Seller will read this. He lives close to you and might know where you can find one close to home.

That is a great suggestion to just get a different hoist complete.
I feel bad because the frame of the hoist is perfect and has the tube type
bolster that is so easy to work with. JD Seller is near by just past Dubuque
a bit , hopefully he will come in here with a suggestion for a solution.
The hoist would be for a 12' box so we hope for the best. Thank you kindly.

Post a picture of the hoist you have. I have several around. There are two on wagons setting in my back yard right now. Bought the wagons cheap at the last consignment sale. They both have hoists on them. I never even looked at the hoists so I can not tell you the brand they are.

Shoot me an email with a phone number and we can talk. I know where there are other hoists too.

Thanks so much for coming in here with the solution to my dilemma
I sure appreciate it. I sent you a email with the information and will
get the pictures when my wife comes home from the State Fair. Midwest
along with other companies must have built and sold boat loads of wagon
hoists but not many made their way up into Wis. for some odd reason?
Thanks again and I look forward to meeting you.

Hello Wagon Larry. Did you find a solution for your hoist? I have a WH-5 on a wagon I use, and my rod is bent. If you found a replacement and would consider selling yours, I might be able to salvage the rod. My cel is 402-676-3299. I'm through your area often between Omaha and Dubuque.

If you cant find what you want I do have a Midwest hoist off a 12 foot wagon laying in the barn. It is in extra good shape. It is in northwest Iowa though.

Hi
Thank you for your interest in my hoist dilemma. Thanks
to JD Seller I now have a good cylinder to fit my Hoist frame
and had the pleasure of meeting JD Seller in person.
Anyone that would like to have the old cylinder is welcome to it
free. Thanks again to everyone's help and advice.

Wagon hoist are hard to find in my area, I have one that I'll be putting under a new bed soon for hauling ear corn.
Would like to have a second hoist as we have a number of running gear but would consider a complete dump wagon.
If anyone has a hoist or dump wagon within reasonable driving distance send me a message.
Not sure what shipping cost would be for a hoist but would consider that as well.
