Ford 1520 issue again...

Many thanks, it was the fuel filter. Replaced it, bled the line, fired it up. Was pretty obvious when you looked at it. I checked back thru my service records and I cannot find where I changed that last. May not have been done in 30 years. A little surprised at myself to be honest.

It is amazing that engines will run with pretty nasty filters/fuel in them. It is easy to miss things when you have multiple engines/tractors/vehicles to take care of.

We have pretty extensive service records and we still miss things on some equipment. It usually is equipment that is not used a lot of hours each year.

My JD 5210 is one of these. It gets used everyday about, but it is just for a few minutes. I have owned it for 15 years. I think we have put 800-900 hours on it in that time. Five or six years ago, right in the middle of a really cold snow storm it died. I thought gelled fuel. It was nasty stuff above the fuel filter in the primer pump that looked like a hockey puck. Like you I could not remember having changed the filter since I first serviced it when I bought it.

So I am glad your issue with your Ford 1520 was a simple one to fix.

That will certainly help performance! Those are good little tractors simple and easy to work on and they hold up well. Ford has made getting parts for them a little tougher but id sure like to have one I worked on these just out of college and for a long time after that at a couple different new Holland dealers

Was my first tractor. It will be the one my kids fight over some day. I bought it in 1989 with a 5' finish mower. Shortly after I added a loader and post hole digger. I still have all of it. I have several tractors now, but this is the one I use every single day. My wife was my good right hand but in 1990 we had our first baby and I learned to make the 1520 do just about anything I needed a second person for. My equipment shed has 20' doors on the west end for the combine and tillage tractor. On the east side is a small slider with a special bay just for the little Ford. A place of honor...so to speak. :)

Yeah, me too. I fired it up and we spent 4 hours catching up on chores we missed the last two days. I have your email from a while back. Just waiting for a few free moments to reply. I will send you an update soon.

Sounds like that little tractor has earned a place in your heart . I?ve always wanted a little compact or even sub compact they sure are handy and the fords and New Holland are good ones . I use dads from time to time

Yup, that's a nasty one. Here's my horror story about that type filter. Neighbor's Ford with that same filter was serviced with a new after market fuel filter, and engine started missing, smoking, and knocking loudly, one injector was stuck open. When he finally got the tractor here it would not run at all. Pump would not deliver fuel as the plungers were stuck too. Replaced all three tips as the needles were stuck tight, was able to free up the stuck pump plungers. Cause was the fuel filter, the top steel part of the new after market was shorter than the original, and went up PAST the sealing O ring on installation so it never sealed and let dirt past.

You never know how much of the load your spouse carries until they can't do it. Plus there are Drs etc. Did the MRI last week. Tuesday we find out does she need surgery. I have to keep checking on her to make sure she is not doing things she shouldnt. She loves her vegetable garden but she cant do it all.
