Ford 1520 issue....

I bought this little tractor new in 1989. Used it for my lawn and garden tractor for a lot of years. Now it is mostly for general tight quarters work. Yesterday it was low on diesel so I filled it up from my 300 gallon tank. That tank was filled last fall so the fuel maybe 10 months old. Tractor ran for a while and then lost power and stalled. Will not restart. battery is about 2 years old. Just little white puffs coming out of exhaust. Took about a half gallon of diesel from the storage tank into a glass jar. Nothing obviously wrong with it. It is dyed and not real transparent...but I cannot remember if diesel should be transparent. No water or sediment in the sample at all. Sure sounds to me like the fuel is suspect but I suppose it could be something else and just a coincidence. Any suggestions? I use it a lot and need it back in the game.

does that model use glow plugs ? and if so are they working ?
Other than that next step may be to change the fuel filter and bleed out the air.

My 1720 won?t start if the glow plugs aren?t used (or working).

With it losing power and not restarting, you ran out of fuel. Maybe not literally, but fuel is not going to the injectors now.

Either the little tiny fuel filter is plugged, Napa does have them if you are far from a dealer. My first guess. Then You need to bleed the system to get it primed up again. About 85% chance this is it.

Or what happened to me last fall. The fuel line got loose somewhere from the tank to the he filter and sucked air. Really couldn?t find anything obvious, I got a length of fuel like, put a metal fitting on one ed dropped in top of tank, ran it down to the filter and clamped it on well. Primed it and ran great. Something in the old line I never did find leaked. They have metric line and clamps I think, which are hard to find here, so my first attempt to just put new line on the old fittings didn?t work. Took me a while to sort out, always on a Friday at 3:30......

Expensive but small chance, it is the injector pump wore out and isn?t feeding the engine high pressure fuel. Could be, but last thing I would check least likely.

I?ve never seen one that would . Dads brand new new Holland won?t start the first time no matter how hot it is and it don?t have 50 hours on it . I?m glad yours starts they are good tractors other than parts are getting hard to get

Check the fuel filter in the bowl at the fuel cutoff valve. They clog easily. When you have the filter off, turn the fuel on and check the flow. You might've gotten a piece of trash floating around that settled in the line from the tank to the valve or in the valve itself.
