Suicide I-70

I-70 cuts through my area, long stretches straight as an arrow. Lots of crashes, often resulting in fatalities. I think it's a pretty safe road, but many of the drivers using it are dangerous.

Sounds like it's just not safe to be on the freeway, if I were you I would just stay off them.

Meh, how many of these crashes involve SCHOOL BUSES??? Pretty sketchy data to be basing that decision on. How many crashes are there on the rural roads they want to travel on??? Sounds like a knee-jerk reaction to me. On average, ALL school bus related accidents, including pedestrians struck, only result in 12 deaths per year. This is minuscule, compared to the number of miles they travel. I've been on that stretch of I-70 quite a bit, and there's nothing that a bit of traffic enforcement would fix.
There's also been a bunch of construction, which may be a factor.

It has been that way since it opened. many moon's back i would make my bi monthly threc down to Oxen hill Md. back in the mid sixtys , now that was back before I 70 was totally done as you had short section of it and sections of Old 40 . We will not get into the land speed records i would break doing so . I had a hand in the building of the interstate system but did not work on I 70 . We crossed I 70 and did the I 70 I 75 interchange , did the grubbing for I 76 of about five miles .

(quoted from post at 17:17:39 07/29/19) Just listen to the traffic reports on the DC area radio stations every morning I70,I270,I95,I66,I495 there is always a demolition derby going on.

I rarely take I-70 or any of the other big roads around here. Work doesn't require that I be out on the highways very often. I listen to the traffic reports in the morning, take another sip of coffee and count my blessings.

We got rear ended last Wednesday evening on I-44 just inside the Joplin,MO city limits.....I had slowed down in the left lane as traffic was backed up and almost stopped..The two drivers behind me weren't paying attention so 3 vehicles were involved......The accident happened right beside a state trooper and he didnt see a thing....My wife ended up in the ER and our 7 month old vehicle may be totaled even though its drivable??If they fix it we will take a $3000 plus trade in hit....About 1 mile ahead traffic was down to one lane as the right lane was closed in both directions due to bridge repair....People drive in the closed lane as far as they can and make people stop and let them in.....I absolutely despise I-44 and I-70 isn't much better...Theres so much traffic they need 3 lanes each way..

I-65 south of indy is no better. Its shut down several times a week for wrecks. To make it worse the main highway that is used for detours is closed for bridge repair. The last count was 7 fatalities this year, including a family headed to the Louisville farm show.

Enforcement is the only real answer. A couple of weeks ago, I had occasion to travel on our local interstate. The lunatics were out in large numbers. As I transitioned from a 4-lane section into a 6-lane section, a tri-axle dump truck came up on me going way over the speed limit. I was just barely keeping up with traffic - doing 75 in a 55 zone. The truck almost ran me down. and nearly tipped over swerving into the next lane to avoid running me over. Next, another lunatic comes up behind me and started flashing his high beams at me. I gave him the finger. I was still doing 75 in a 55 zone. How fast did this knucklehead want to go? Next comes some kid in a souped up foreign rig going much faster than traffic and zigzagging from lane to lane passing on both sides.

that was just the more memorable high points of that trip. I called the state police on my cell phone and asked them where all of the enforcement was. I was not comfortable travelling that fast just to keep from being run over. They informed me that there were indeed troopers out there. I replied that they were not doing a very good job of it.

These days, the violators far outnumber the cops. Traffic safety will not improve until there is some serious enforcement. Start by setting a reasonable speed limit. Follow that with aggressive patrolling by marked and visible patrol cars. Target the most blatant violators, and stay visible. Only then will things start to calm down - both on your road and mine.

You need to look into a diminished value claim. I did that when a guy rearended me in my truck. His insurance fix my truck at no charge to me but i also did a diminished value claim to his insurance. I did that because now that truck has a carfax that it was in a accident and that diminished the value of the truck. I got a check for 3000 so it will be worth your time to check into that. If you need to know more about the process of that just email me .

I agree with jim. enforcement is the key but the courts don't do there job. penalties aren't hard enough on people who cause accidents or with people who have multiple infractions. our society today is more of a law breaking society than there ever was because of courts. when will it change. I drive 70 on highways with that limit. I get passed a whole lot especially by women. worse after the 15th. I guess the law officers has met there quotas by then.

Keeping the busses off i70 will probably save a boatload of money in tire and suspension repairs.

Friggin North Carolina, school busses get out on the interstate and do 40-45. May as well paint targets on the back.

Thanks,we are going to have a fit if we dont get a diminished value check for our damaged vehicle because the Carfax will say that it was hit hard in the rear.....Our local car dealer said that if its fixed he would offer us at least $3000 less if and when we trade it off.....The local body shop said that the damage is bad enough that he won't give a bid as he may have to cut it open to look at it....We have a replacement clause in our insurance policy that if its totaled we get a new vehicle since its less than one year old and has under 15,000 miles...Our insurance adjuster from Joplin was supposed to be here today but she was sick so maybe tomorrow we will get a determination on whether to fix it or total it..

We've had many fatalities on I 70 caused by road construction slowing traffic. When traffic backs up
and a semi drivers don't slow there is going to be a major crash. In three different accidents it
involved drivers from Canada. Last crash the semi driver died. One crash the semi driver killed kids
and court gave him a slap on the hand for distracted driving, $500 fine.

So much for courts solving the problem.

I drive 70, I watch for crazy drivers changing lanes, speeding, and tail gating.

Then a semi driver gets in the left lane, takes miles to pass, and backs up traffic. I back off a 1/4
mile and wait for a major Daytona race crash.

I'm starting to think some of you guys need to take a remedial driving class.
Things have changed since 1965 when some of you got your learner's permit.

Drivers in general are getting worse and worse. many of the younger ones just point the car and go. no care or concern on how to get there or anyone or anything around them.

over the past year or so i keep getting nearly hit turning left onto side roads. its not the people on the main road. its the person sitting on the side road at the stop sign waiting to go. Especially if i have to wait for a car on the main road going the other way to pass before i can turn. I cannot tell you how many times, even though i am plainly sitting there waiting to turn left, the car on the side road starts to go before i start to make my turn. of course when they move and start to go they make it harder for me to turn and i have to swing out further, taking more time and holding both of us up. i don't get it. the last time a guy in a bmw had to slam on his breaks so he didn't hit me as i was turning left. ??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!! i just don't get this phenomenon.

the bigger problem on all roads is people not staying in their lane and constantly hugging or crossing the center line.

also alot of people turning left into another road take the center of the road during the turn. even if you're already there.

i've lived in Norther Indiana for 25 years. it still amazes me that the local drivers will do anything to not put their brakes on if a car is stopped on the road to turn left. I swear many don't even take their foot off the gas. some berms aren't that good to drive on. really dangerous here as the berms are the Amish highway, including buggies, bikes, skidloaders (they use like cars), and pedestrians. they usually are wearing black or dark blue. i'm amazed more haven't been hit.

So tell us old codgers what we are doing wrong on the interstates....We drive the speed limit or maybe a tad more, we dont tailgate, we signal when we pass and pull back in, we signal at off ramps and dont pull across 2 lanes to get to the ramp at the last second with no signal, we slow down in construction areas and get in the correct lane, we pay attention to whats going on ahead, we dont text or talk on the cell phone, etc..What am I forgetting?

I was 3 years old in 1965, so--if I did my math right--I'm 57 now. I thought the transition to being an "old fogey" was maybe a few years off but perhaps I'm on the fast-track. Only remains for me to stand by the road, waving a cane, yelling "Slow down you whippersnappers!"

Anyway, I follow the rules I learned in driver's ed, the ones someone below listed off. Yes, others get angry if I don't drive 95 MPH, but they can always pass me as I poke along at 75 in the far right lane those times I'm on the big roads. I'm interested in this discussion because I really think drivers have gotten worse, and I thought maybe it was only my area that was so bad. Looks like it's happening all over.

Vehicular performance has far exceeded the skill of the operators in many cases. I'm running I-83 for work now, and you're either wolf or sheep. I figure it's safer being wolf.

In the past 15-20 years its gotten far worse almost everywhere on the interstates..Theres far more vehicles on
the road and they all want to drive 10-20 MPH over the speed limit on the 4 lanes while not paying attention....
I set the cruise on 73 and everyone passes me...I dread construction zones where they take 2 lanes down to one..

You need to go through somebody that does that and can help you through that not a car dealer. Your not going to "Just get a Check for diminished value. Google somebody in your area that does diminished value claims might cost you a couple hundred bucks. What they do they will come and take pictures of your car and give you a estimate of your cars value before the crash and after the crash. If your car was 7 months old and now it close to totaled your in for much more that 3000 dollars. it would be to your advantage to look in to that. I didnt know anything about a diminished value till the guy at the bodyshop told me about because he knew that my truck was new at the time when i took my truck in for the repair. Down here in North Carolina i went to dvcheck.com got intouch with that guy and he helped me out with mine at the time it was just 99 bucks now i think its around 200 because i told a friend of mine after he had a crash up he told me it was 200.
