Auction Opportunity

Upcoming auction has a Stage 1 Super H and a Farmall 350.
Both have been shedded and unused for several years. Tin
straight and both do not have original paint. Rubber is
questionable on both. It is my understanding that both were
running two days ago. Looking for Tractor Ride unit for my
son. Driving either before auction is not possible. Which way
would you go? Thanks

If the condition is equal, go with the 350, especially if it has live PTO, a working TA, live hydraulics, dual or triple hydraulic valves, fast hitch, 12 volt electrics and maybe power steering. Those all make the 350 more useful. It used to be that 300's and 350s didn't sell for much more than a H, but going forward I suspect the number series will hold their value fairly well as the price of the letter series drops.

For a tractor ride tractor I would go with the H so I would not have all the extras on the 350 to go bad and have to fix. The H should be able to take any hills just as easy as any of the other tractors in the tractor ride. Less stuff to be bad at last minute to keep from going on the ride. And I personly do not like the looks of the number series of Farmalls. But just about the minute ride should start the TA or power steering would go out and you would be setting. Now a user I might go with the 350. but not for a tractor ride tractor. I grew up on an H so I know what they are capable of. Our H steered easy, now a neighbor complained about his steering hard, never understood that.

i agree with leroy for the h. much simpler tractor, easy to fix, and would be a lot cheaper to maintain over time.

All he was wanting to do was go on tractor drives not work it. Get simplest so hopefully any thing that can go wrong on road can be repaired on the road without calling the towtruck.

As long as it is a super H you will be fine on the roads. If it was a regular H they barely pull their self in high gear. I would be very Leary of buying a tractor at an auction I could not drive before hand. It would have to sell really cheap.

Ok, so what can REALLY "go bad" on a 350 that is going to make it that much less reliable than an H for tractor rides? I've never really bought into the "more to go wrong" argument...

TA? When the TA goes out on these it's 9,999 times out of 10,000 the low side and you can run it in direct practically forever. Having the TA go out on the low side would be no more than a momentary inconvenience. Let the lever ahead, and away you go.

Hydraulics? The pump would have to seize solid to prevent the tractor from running and driving. That's not how these pumps fail. They wear away and stop making pressure. You don't even notice they've failed until you try to raise an implement.

Live PTO doesn't even factor in.

Other than that, the 350 is practically identical to the H in design, layout, size, etc..

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I have firm limits as to what I will bid on the tractors. Probably will come home with a bid card?

I pulled lots of loads of grain to elevator in high gear with no problems, this was with a 41H and no it did not have in anything to raise power, all standard IH engine parts. So I cannot understand why yours was like that.

I've ran a few IH H's . I'm not an IH man by any means ,but the last one I drove was a super H and man what a difference ! I could go up the driveway in high gear ! I call it dyno hill. Before I got my actual dyno. Any JD will go up it in high gear unless it is just plain worn out.
One of them I had working on was a really early one. It may of had all -fuel pistons ? as it had a small gas tank and the large tank for fuel. Had another H there too and it was still weaker than that super H.
