I went to Iowa yesterday and of course
there's a lot of heavy truck traffic on
the freeway.
Noticed this grain trailer with no ICC
bar on the back end.
I thought all semi trailers had to have
an ICC bar.
Notice the dry van on the right does
have it.
What's the deal?
Thanks.

i don't know for sure, but my guess is the axle is far enough back to prevent getting to far under...

So trucks/trailers have exemptions.

Dump trailers
Trailers with lift gates
Pole and pulp wood trailers

That grain trailer is what is considered a "Wheels back vehicle"
Because of the hoppers under the trailer the rear wheels are fix mounted.
They do not slide up under the trailer.
So no ICC bar is required.

As others have said it depends on the overhang of the body. I used to know the number of inches but would have to look it up now.

They hung some jayne bars on some grain trailers mostly for a step, wouldnt stop a bicycle at 10 mph.
We had 2 merrit trailers,1 broke on 1 side, torched it off before it went in a windshield.but those merrits were rather flimsey. Wilson or timpte let the rest set
