I have a 1949 Ford 8N My forward gears work but when I put it in reverse it s like the brakes are on and it stalls the motor just before this happened it was making a little somewhat rattling noise in the transmission when going in reverse need to know where to start

The reverse idler is coupled to the main gear sets with a sliding "dog" clutch. If the reverse Idler is jammed and cannot turn, Then it would
lock up in reverse. Pulling the cover and looking in may be the only way to assess it. Find diagrams/parts layout to see what I mean. Jim
