Broke it but got it home

After two days of running around for it, the spare rake got home. Allis Chalmers no.7, 1957 or so, side hay rake. I think it's 9'. AND, it's also a tedder!!! Maybe this will end up being my main rake. I did break it on the way home though. The nice lady who sold it to me was following me to make sure it went okay that far at least, until I turned off the main road. I felt bad that she was wasting her day following me, so I went faster than I should've, I guess, and the one wheel that is a coaster-type wheel, 360* turnable wheel, threw a huge fit out of the blue, and jiggled the whole truck and all, and I stopped, and the casting that the top of the fork comes down from cracked all the way around. The core piece was still good enough to hold it all together. So upset that happened. Speaking of learning to weld..
So I was able to pull it the rest of the way home 20+ more miles, but had to go 10mph or less. Looks like an excellent rake though. $100 plus cost of running all around yesterday, having to get a new tire and tube on the rim before taking it home.

I had one of those years ago on the farm. One of the best rakes I've ever owned, just be careful not to let it dig into the ground when raking all the time. That can mess up the gearbox pretty quick if I remember correctly/ Keith

You need to develop your own U-Tube channel. Your adventures are far more interesting and dramatic than "WT
Farm Girl's" U tube videos.--------------------Loren

Great to hear you like this rake! I had never seen one, but the moment I did see it when I went to look at the things she had for sale, I thought "ooooo, yes, this is GOOD!" I'll keep an eye on the teeth height, thanks!

Is that a cast iron or cast steel piece? If iron, I?d definitely pay
a welder who knows what to do. Maybe even if it?s steel. Or
can you find a replacement easily?

Only rake my dad ever had was the AC pto rake.
And yes it will tedd hay as well as rake hay into
windrows. The castering front wheel is something of
a pain. And as I recall, when you want to unhook
your tractor from the rake, it is best to back up a
little to get the front tire to rotate. Makes it better to
hook onto next time.

I'll have to look up wt girls channel to see what you're talking about. Thanks! I have primitive computers and computer and video skills, and not really much time to mess with video-ing. I do have lots of adventures though, good and bad. Now, if I could make a million bucks on doing videos, maybe I would. Like, as a job. Would for sure need to upgrade computer and things.

Height is especially critical if you use it to ted. It will peel off teeth pretty fast if you let it dig into the ground while tedding. One of those was my first rake, and it was good. Works especially well if you are pulling it with a 3 point tractor, and hitch it to a 3 point drawbar- then you can make height adjustments on the fly with the 3 point. It did seem hard on it to ted, especially if you're tedding an already-raked windrow.

I very much doubt I could get a replacement part, So yes, I would need to find a good welder-person. I don't even know which metal it is.

That is not a #7 rake, the number 7 is rare and hard to find. This one is the earlier model and has no number. Here is a pick of my #7, actually not mine anymore, I sold it a couple of weeks ago.

oh no, I thought for sure it was the 7 and ordered the no.7 manual. Do you know what the differences are? I saw the manual for the un-numbered one, and that one didn't seem right. I didn't say that it also is a tedder like the 7 is. Can't remember if there were other things that didn't match up the one I have.

okay, I looked again at the un-numbered manual and it doesn't say tedder on the front but it does in the table of contents. Darn, got the wrong manual. Thanks for pointing that out. I would've found out myself what I had done in a few days! Uggh. I guess I should've waited until I got the thing home to look it over better! The instructions should be very similar though?

Hahaha! No more rakes!!! :D
We are about to have a huge storm with possibl tornado. Hope I can come back to YT later

They just reported a funnel cloud over hyw 8 and 13 near Prentice that is about 4 miles from us we are getting a lot of rain and straight line wind looks like a tough night ahead. Randy

The broken part is cast iron.

Bad news, it will never be the same. Cast can be welded or brazed, but best left to the pros who have the experience and proper techniques.

Good news, the reason it broke was because it was subject to an unusual event that won't happen during normal use. So, it has a good chance of surviving after being repaired.

The assembly will need to come apart before going to the weld shop. Clean it up, remove all the grease. You will make the welder much happier, best pay for welding, not cleaning.

I see it broke across the tapped hole for the grease fitting. My suggestion to the welder, weld the hole up solid, move the grease fitting to another location in solid material.

It's still green outside and tons of lightening and thunder but I'm sure the tornadoes are past us. Done for now. We have been in the basement Came up and I ran out to check the horses. Fence is down but not the one they are in. I saw that something hit the fence and tipped it sidways. No tree on it. Then I went over to the opposite side and it was down there and almost cut right through the electric rope. Then I saw a window lying on the ground! The truck topper window! THE WHOLE DARN TOPPER IS GONE!!! I don't know which neighbor has now! When we were in the basement, there was a zap and my right shoulder got electricuted. How and why could that happen. We moved into the next room in the basement away from the room with the electric box.

There are a lot of those rakes out there. I just sold two of them to a guy last month, told him to make one out of them, so he probably would sell the part you need. Problem is I deleted his phone number... There was also a part of one up the road that I saw a couple of years ago...not sure if it is still there or got scrapped out....

Hey I was able to get find the guy's number that bought the two rakes...PM me and I will send it to you.

Dahlin, What damage did you end up getting? Did you see the funnel or tornado? We went out and found the topper 400 feet from where it was in a ditch. Not fixable. Need to find where the other missing window went.

Okay, thanks Steve! And I'll clean it all up good if I bring it somewhere. I did message EldonWA for the number for the guy that might have parts. Wouldn't that be nice?

Your last pics show the rake Dad bought new in 1949. There was a tandem wheel option....front and rear, for wetter soil. We seldom used the tedder, but it was nice to have it. Raked many windrows for the Roto-Baler with it. Yes, it is 9 feet wide. We had a large wood block to rest the tongue on at home, but to unhook in the field we"d tip it up, with the front caster wheel turned to the side. I was a little runt and had a hard time with that...10-11 years old. Worse was re-hooking and dropping it on the ground.

Hated greasing that thing- soooo many zerks!

(quoted from post at 06:56:16 07/20/19) Window might never be found and was rhe topper on a truck or just laying in the yard?
I had been storing the topper in the garage but just a week ago decided it didn't need to be taking up space in there, and so moved it out to the eqiupment yard. Found the other window but I think there are trim parts around somewhere.

I had one, the wife could not lift the tung and hook it up so had to get rid of it. The front wheel pivots
on brake lining material and wears out eventually. May need to replace it as you don't want metal grinding
on metal.
Great rake

I just read that in my (wrong) manual that just came today! About the stabilizing lining in there. Says there's a friction brake for going over rough places.
I think the opposite. I was absolutely amazed at how light and easy it is to pick up to hitch. I thought it was going to be impossible. And I really like that jack thing on there, works great.
