Thread Tape On Spark Plug Threads

Farmall Regular has oil seeping around all four spark plugs. Causes no problem, but doesn't look nice. If I wrap thread tape around the threads to stop the oil, will the tape insulate them, and prevent them from firing?

No, but good copper gaskets are better. The tape will insulate the shell of the plug and make it substantially hotter than designed. Molybdenum disulfide anti seize on the threads will help in the right direction as well. Jim

The surface area mechanical contact of the plug threads to the head is what dissipates heat I don't like the idea of reducing the heat transfer of plugs to the head but its your tractor and your choice, for sure they will run HOTTER lol.....Yes they use that as their ground also !!!!!!!!! but that HV would find an arc path but that's NOT something Id want to use either.........?.

Don't do it. That's the ground path for the plugs. Many times when a plug don't fire strong it's because the threads are rusty. Can you get the washers off the plugs and turn them around? Then tighten them up real tight. What's oil doing up there anyhow?

are you torqueing them properly? plus is the sealing gaskets on the plugs on them or not? a plug with a good gasket and tightened will not leak. can put some never seize on the threads also.

ou need more troubles in life! :!:

I doubt the oil is coming past the spark plug threads. At any rate, if you put teflon tape on the threads you probably won't be able to get the plugs in, let alone properly torque them. If you're convinced the oil is coming past the plugs, clean out the spark plug holes with a thread chaser and install new plugs.

Let us use a bit of logic here. What is on the other side of the spark plug? The combustion chamber. There is usually NO OIL in the combustion chamber unless you have a completely worn out set of rings. So, if there is no oil on the other end of those threads, how could it possibly be leaking past them?

Putting any type of thread sealer on spark plug threads is simply not useful. The seal is made by either a tapered seat or a gasket. NOT the threads.

Oil is coming from someplace else.

(quoted from post at 04:07:02 07/09/19) Are you sure it is not running down from the valve cover?

That is the usual case.....even a very small, virtually unnoticeable leak of the valve cover may accumulate in the spark plug "pockets" which might then look like the oil is seeping from around the plugs.

Oil can come out by plugs if wrong plugs are used. Some old tractors should have a washer on them some don't. If it doesn't have a washer I would try plugs that do.

On a 70 GMC 307 had one plug that keept getting oil on outside like that, never could get it to stop. Valve seal replaced by local garage a couple of times. The plug was always oil fouled as well as the oil setting around base of plug. Other 7 plugs always OK. Garage never figured out what to do about the oil fouling and then leaking past the plug. Plugs had to be changed constantly due to the oil fouling. Ido not know if those plugs were for the gasket or not as garage always did the work. But some way that oil did get past the plug threads as the inner end of plug was always oil fould. If from outside leak would noy have been doing it to the electrode end of plug so someway it did get past the plug threads. Had to have things changed dozens of times over the years the truck was in service.
