The first garage I worked and did my apprenticeship at was agents for the Newman tractor but I do not think we ever sold one. We had a new one in stock that never sold. It had a single cylinder Dorman (I think) engine that was hard to start so it was removed and a Ford 10hp Prefect car engine and gearbox were fitted in its place. This gave us a works tractor which could be put in "double reverse" and with the engine revving, would move forward at about 10 yards an hour. At the other end, select "double top" and it would do nearly 40 mph. Us boys were never allowed to use that gear on pain of being sacked but, when no one was looking we, of course, tried it out.
A saw bench was built onto the back of the tractor and it was used to cut up wood for our garage central heating system. The pulley was driven through the Ford gearbox and gave three speeds and reverse.
The Newman was sold when the garage closed down in the 1960's but I saw it on the back of a passing wood merchants lorry only a couple of months ago with the saw still in use.
