Rough day mowing

Got started on the field with Johnson Grass higher than my head. Tough going. Then I discovered a tiny fawn caught in the fence. Her hind leg was dislocated at the hip and the wire had cut her leg to the bone all the way around near the hoof. I cut her out of the fence and my cousin called the Game Warden. He came and we evaluated the damage. He decided the damage was irreversible and euthanasia was the most humane thing to do. He took the fawn. Then I discovered I'd lost my glasses (Rx safety glasses). I checked where the fawn was, where my tractor was and finally found them in my cousin's truck. Soooo then, back to mowing. All was well until the bolt holding the PTO shaft to the gearbox shaft broke. Fortunately I found one in their shop. Got'er dun though. I feel bad about the fawn. There was another one and I watched to make sure it got to safety.

Those deer are thick as flies here. Used to feel terrible hitting them with the discbine, now I?m getting tired of them landing on my hood or hurling themselves into the side of our cars at highway speed. Even trying to leave the house to get in the car there?s 10 starting there snorting at you, then they stand and block the driveway such that you can get within inches.

Is this enough??? Doesn't look doctored. I had 26 or 28 of them come out of the rear field a couple of weeks ago. Looked like a miniature Buffalo stampede.

She can't get any locals to bale because they don't want to contaminate their equipment.

I guess those Massey's aren't mean looking enough or make enough noise when mowing. Several years ago I was mowing hay with a 245 and I came across 4 fawns, killed two of them with the sickle bar:-( The hay was so thick I couldn't see them early enough to stop. Not good.

Iv'e had them like that here at my place but housing developments are going in all around me so there aren't quite as many. Going out in the dark to get the paper can be dangerous.

Holy tick grass Batman! This last year has made it impossible to walk through a 2' wide patch of grass that's knee high and not get a tick on you. Never had to worry about it before around me (Central MI), but if I walked through grass like your mowing, I probably wouldn't make it out alive.

Too bad about the fawn. I've got some mowing coming up soon just like that. Owner doesn't want it cut til around the 4th of July so I don't disturb the wildlife.
This is last year's cutting. I can only imagine what I'm in for this year with all the rain we've had....

What amazes me is that one of the ones I missed did not move with the tips of the guards less than 3 inches from it when I locked up the brakes. In over 22 years of mowing those same fields I've only had one fawn that got up and moved before I went by it. It looked to be a few weeks older so maybe it had 'learned' to get up. I like the horn idea though, just in case.
Also odd to me I've cut up snakes mowing but never a rabbit. The few fawns I have seen and were able to miss I put gloves on and place them in the brush, have seen them with momma few days later.

We had a fawn caught in an old line fence in the woods years ago. She had been pulling to try to get out and had cut thru the bone. We freed her and brought her up to the house, used a pair of linesman pliers to cut the remaining skin, bandaged her up and called out a conservation office who got us a permit to keep her. She lived for 17 years at the farm. Best vegetarian attack dog ever and a great companion. Made it hard to go hunting after that.
